So to catch you up, carburetor, intake, cold air, hood clearance.

My engine is too big to fit a standard circle air filter on the carb AND have it clear a stock hood. As it is, the gutted hood I have is sitting on the stud that screws a filter down. To run a filter, I'd have to get a hood scoop of some sort. I'm really doubting that I'll have to get a turbo. This engine is that beef cake now. So hood scoops are expensive. Not to mention there is no way to attach a fiberglass scoop to a metal hood and blend it with filler. It will always crack or look like i bolted a scoop on the car. Yuck. I could get a fiberglass hood with a built in cowl but those are $400-700. I can think of lots of go fast parts for that much. So as it is:

$90 to 140 - Scoop
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SSE%2D950%2D72100&N=700+115&autoview=sku

$40 cheap filter housing
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2D239441&N=700+4294739245+4294756359+115&autoview=sku

And then it's not even cold air! It's whatever air is there, which would most likely be coming from the engine unless the filter pokes up just enough and I cut the hole just right so it pokes into the scoop.

And then there's this.......

$176
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2DG3019%2D1&N=700+4294887855+115&autoview=sku

Will this be the riciest thing I can put on my car? Why does it have to make the most mechanical sense? Cold air, large intake, near ram air, filter elements built in, just need to cut a hole. The only saving grace is the car is fast enough to pull something like this off. Especially if I get the black one since the car will have a black hood. Please either slap me from this senseless nonsense or reinforce the alure that is surrounding it.

Like this, but it would be black with a black hood.

Can I talk you up instead? Very Happy

I've always loved those scoops on older muscle cars. I never thought it would look good on a thirdgen, but that picture you posted is pretty sweet...

Your car is definitely beefy enough to do that, and as long as you can keep the scoop low like in the picture I think you'll be fine.

I say go for it! Twisted Evil

Everytime I think about it I want to do it. I've always liked them as well! So now the thread is a poll.

I know someone who has a GM fiberglass hood that will give it away if you want to pay shipping Wink It needs some TLC

Its something different. I say go with the scoop, everyone has a cowl it seems. Its not plastic, so I think you're good on it not being "ricey."

This is your 454 motor, right? (saw your cardomain)

When do you think you'll have that car running?

Oh ya, just for an update, I discovered that #4 and #6 plug wires were swapped. It's now faster than my lt1 car was.... After I get the gauge sensor in tonight I'll go for a cruise and take a video. I need to double check how it's running anyway.

Laughing so hard it hurts

Sorry man, I've done that too, but the way you phrased it just cracked me up.

The only sad part was the fact that other than a little rough idle and the occasional backfire it ran fine! I'd say a 454 on 6 cylinders is faster than my V6 Laughing

or better yet, go function. Build a low-profile carb-hat for it, then run it to a cone filter, fitted into a sealed section where the battery would be, and then run a NACA duct, so that you actualy get cold air.

There just is no good solution to making room. That's one reason why I have never done anything with my car. At least you have a Camaro and can pull of the cowl induction hood better.
