Welcome! Smile
You can make that 2.8 sound cool and feel a little stronger with a cold air intake, and a good cat-back exhaust, although any more modding and you might wanna consider an engine swap.

'82 with a 2.8 sixer? Why did they decide to do that swap?

Not to be a nay-sayer, but a 2.8L will never be fast, unless you find a way to put nitros-oxide to, or a turbo, but even so that limits its life. GM pretty much made s--tty engines in early 1980's vehilcles. They were focusing more on making the technology they had conform to the EPA standards enacted in 1981.

Plus if its the pre-86 2.8. The front and rear crank journal were weird sizes and didn't match. There's been all kinds of balance/seizure issues with them.

honestly dude, if you want to go fast, a 2.8L isn't gonna do it, If you love the chassis, keep it, but swap in a Small Block Chevy V8, althogh that swap is a lot of work in itself.

Some of the Sport Coupes also had the Iron Duke 4 cylinder that year.

And the early 2.8L motors are VERY prone to rod knock.

You're best bet is saving and swappin in a V8. I used to think those carbs were pretty evil with the vacuum lines and linkage etc.... now that I've worked on a few 80's Jap cars/trucks.... the 2.8L carbs are a breeze! LOL

Lmao! We usually dont even try to fix those jap carbs in our shop. Short of anything obvious or maybe a shop rag rebuild. Rebuilding one just never seems to make the customer happy. Too many things to go wrong.

x2

Look at my sig though for some ideas. edelbroc makes intakes though for carbureted v6's. you'd benefit from getting an 86+ block or even just the heads. Larger valves means more hp. you can read the history of the 60* v6 at www.60degreeV6.com

Did the 2.8 design ever go to splayed rod journals on the crank like the 4.3's did?

I kinda want to pick one of those up. It'd be cool to build a small turbo kit with a port fuel injection setup/standalone ECM and just have a cruiser thirdgen that will make people go 'WTF?'

And Welcome!

Welcome to the PNW, Unfortunatly I no longer live there. Honestly, it would be cheaper to buy a V8 then do a swap into a 6 cylinder car. Just a decent rebuilt stock engine would be a grand or more, I wouldn't do the swap myself, I would save up my money, Use the car as a good around town car, and purchase an RS or IROC later for 1500-2000 and you'll be much happier.

Just my $.02
