Hey, remember that 350 I picked up for $300 a few weeks ago? Well, TJ and I ran the casting numbers and found out that its actually a 307!!! Shocked Mad Worst f'ing small block ever! I am hella pissed! But on a positive note, we discovered that the 350 that was in the T/A is a four bolt main block and should be usable after re-honing. So thats the new plan. Now I need some good heads... Wink

Ouch!

Those blocks are the low nickel soft metal ones right?

Wear out easy? Not to mention the lack of displacement being a major problem Wink

I also seem to remember something about the bore-to-stroke ratio being undesirable for power too...

At least you got a good core to build with still!

nonsense. I would argue the 267 is the worst small block ever made. Destroked 305 anyone?? Thumbs down

You at least get a the Large Journal 327 crank with a 307, and the heads are like 64 or 66cc heads (small chambers). If I were you I'd take your 350 Block and use the 307 crank and make a killer 327 out of it.

How could the 327 be better than a 350 with the same heads?

I see a Franken-engine in the works...350 block, 305 heads (the rebuilt ones that came with the TA) and a 307 crank. Twisted Evil

I had a 70 chevy pickup, I knew it was not the original motor since it had center bolt valve covers, so I ran the block numbers, found out it was a 305 out of a 89 camaro.
2 years after selling it the guy I sold it to was selling it on craigslist, he put on his add that it had a 350 in it.
I can't tell 1 from the other either.
I'M sure somebody know's all the things to look for to tell them apart.
Bob

The 305 heads actually have bigger intake valves despite the 307 having a larger bore. Might just put the 305 heads on it and keep it around for future install into the RS. I've read about people making power with 307s, but its alot of work. Sad

I don't know about "better" but I assumed he just had a bare 4 bolt block with a 4" bore (the "350" block). Thus it made sense to use the crank out of the 307 and sell the rest.

Brandon is making the same power with a CCC on a 327, as a couple other crewbies are making with their modified L98's.

Sorry for the confusion, the 350 is a complete short block. Wink

Gotta remember that a couple 305s have made the same power as the L98's as well. The main thing I like about a 327 is its hp per mpg. It seems to create hp more efficiently then the larger motors. As others always say though, more cubes = more ultimate power.

As for the 307, I personally think its a better combo then the 305. It has a larger bore so the valves are less shrouded, yet same cubes. They really got a bad rap because gm never made a performance version of them. All 307s got small valve heads, 2 barrel intakes, yesterdays version of the peanut cam, and single exhaust. So hp was very limited, which had nothing to do with the actual configuration of the short block.

For an economy 5.0 engine, I think a 307 with a set of 416 305heads.. and a small cam like a comp 256/262 or voodoo equivalent, headers, and 4 barrel would outperform a similar 305 setup.

This motor is gonna have TPI induction, so it will already have gobs of low end torque.
