I have never claimed to be mechanically inclined, I just sort of know what i know and wanna learn more.
So I figure if I take apart my car I am bound to learn something. And I was under there today and I pulled a piece that is the bellhousing? But it was made of plastic... The only thing seperating my torque converter from FOD was a piece of plastic?
Does this sound right... Am I missing a part of the picture? _________________

That's just to keep dirt out of the area. No biggie, the few automatics I have had never had the piece in place.
It's not keeping pieces IN, just dirt out!

I realize it is just a dust cover. I may be stupid but I am not that stupid... err actually, no. Forget I said that
Isnt it just a little unsettling to you guys to know that the only thing keeping a rock from slamming into your TC and flywheel is a piece of plastic? _________________

It's strong plastic and held on by four bolts! C'mon man, rocks? our bumpers are squishy, I'd be more concerned about something hittin me and creamin me through the lack of bumpers, than a rock hitting a thing of plastic... besides, any rock that would hit it would be on an angle toward the back of the car, no directly for.
Remeber you're moving! Besides, I don't drive with one, neither does the S10 or other people I know on here.
There isn't anything protecting your driveshaft, but that's okay?

First, I don't think ANYbody here thought you were stupid in the least, there were no pokes at you. (We can if you'd like though!!)
Second, the amount of energy that can be imparted from a rock travelling upwards, even being deflected OFF the ground, is very small and the plastic is fairly thick. More than enough protection. It won't, however, protect against a very large rock, that's what a "skid plate" is for!
Besides, history shows that it WORKS, right?
