difference between hex and 12 pt bolt head

I was just looking at engine bolts that they sell on jegs. They have 12 pt and hex heads. Is there any difference besides preference?

12 points are supposed to be harder to round off. But they'll require that your tools are 12 pt.

I've always found for fasteners that need a lot of torque on them, 6pts with a 6pt wrench or socket is best.
