The biggest factor will probably be price range. What sort of budget are you looking at?

also, do you have any experience with prep work? how much body damage is there? and what is the end result you are looking for? show quality or just a "damn that car looks good" while driving down the road?

i am not looking for show quality
and the budget really depends on what price gets what, i am not looking to spend a huge amount but i want it to look good |

| A relative idea is helpful. Large ammounts is very relative and subjective. For one person, large ammounts could be $1500, another $15,000. |

Some quotes i got when i repainted, I had ALL the prep work done. bondo, primer, puddy, and wetsanded. I got prices in the $2000-$10,000
this was for shooting only. It is a very rough estimate and like everything. You get what you pay for when it comes to paint. It is a big expense but it is not something you can do cheaply and then upgrade later.

Honestly, dont expect to pay anything less then 1g for spray n clear (you doing majority prep).
I worked at a shop for a summer 12 years ago. Decent brand paint was IIRC about 200 a gallon(non metalic), and then clear was a bit more then that. Plus thinners, additives.
I belive the bill on a Caddy.. chrome removed, sanded, 1dent fixed, white, blue pearl, clear, wet sanded, buffed. I think that was 5g's then. Wild guess on who did most of the work?
I have seen some decent jobs come from *shivers* maco when the owner sanded the car themselfs, removed all trim, lights, etc. Then towed the car to the shop. Of course, they did pay for the "best" paint job then which was still several hundred. |

| whatever you do please God don't go to Earl Scheib's! I know a guy who took his 73 charger there and it looks like crap! I've heard the same about Macco, as long as you do the prep work yourself and pay for some decent quality paint, it can turn out fine. |

Don't hit Pacific Motor Company on MLK or Kay Parks off of 12th I think. Premier Collision on 1st and Division is awesome, as well as Salatino's on 56th and Adams. _________________

| Dupont makes all levels of paint. I've sprayed a couple different kinds and it seems to work well for me. Martin Senour single stage seemed easier to spray then the dupont single. The paint I sprayed on my firebird this year is dupont Chromabase/chromaclear. To get all the products required to spray the plastic parts etc, and the paint/primers/reducers/activators, ran me bout $1200 for materials. |

IIRC Dupot is what gm used in the early/mid 80's and is most likely what your car came with.
I personally have never used there products as its not sold at the parts stores I go to. I have seen it used and works as well as any other name brand paint.
Around here, PPG seems to be the favored, and thats what I have used the most of. |

It's best to get new rubber as the stuff forms a "memory " to the tops and probably will not seal well on another car or set of tops. _________________ 92 Camaro

J&J autobody on S. Tac. Way does good work. I'm not sure if they do complete paint jobs though. He was willing to do mine if I wanted (didn't have the money at the time), but that may have been because they know our family. If you go, talk to Lauren. He's good people and will be straightforward with you. Quoted me about $6000.00 to do a complete on my car if I did some of the disassembly. If you can do prep work and disassembly, you could likely reduce that a lot. My car needed (needs) a decent amount of body work--nothing serious, but lots of little stuff, door dings, flaking paint, etc. Point being if you do the prep, it will save you coinage. _________________ Vaneat-91RS

Salatino's is good but EXPEN$IVE!!! Stroud's on South Tacoma Way & 38th does quality work as well but they are also a bit pricey. Took my '94 SC there after it got stolen. I've actually taken two of my Camaros to the Maaco on Pine St. (across from the police station) and had decent luck. In both cases I did the body work myself however. _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

| That Maaco has usually had some decent looking cars sitting out front. A buddy of mine that I went to school with works at Stroud's. If you think Salatino's is expensive try looking at the parking lot of Paramount Centre in Fife across the street from Art Morrison. Cheapest car there is usually a vette or two. Mostly high end porsche's, MB's, BMW's, Jag's. Seen a couple lambo's and older Ferrari's there. Crazy stuff. |

idk, i wasnt talking about the actual weather stripping, but a rubber piece that goes across the top... i got it off after destroying a [broken] t-top.. so that problem is solved..

Hey Ian, have you seen the big dent in side of Alex's GTO? I think he said he was taking it to Salatinos. Of course the other guy's insurance is paying for it. |
