|
|
So at some point over the weekend of Cows, my reverse lights decided they wanted to stop working.
I'm thinking maybe I should get around to doing this.
I'll try bridging the wires together on the plug to see if I get lights...if not and it is the plug in the transmission:
1) How hard is it to get out (i.e can I just put a wrench on it and remove it)
2) Will I need to drain the fluid out of the trans first?
3) How can I test the switch to make sure its good (Use a DVOM?)
4) If the switch needs replaced, can it be found at any parts store, or will I have to go to the stealership?
I'll go test and report back. _________________

1) How hard is it to get out (i.e can I just put a wrench on it and remove it)
-Unscrews like anything else.
2) Will I need to drain the fluid out of the trans first?
-No. Just check to see if the fill plug is higher or lower than the switch. If the plug is lower than the switch, you wont lose and fluid either.
3) How can I test the switch to make sure its good (Use a DVOM?)
-Set the DVOM to continuity. Depress the little ball on the end of the switch and see if there is continuity.
4) If the switch needs replaced, can it be found at any parts store, or will I have to go to the stealership?
-Napa probably has them. Otherwise it should be the same T5 to T5 so a boneyard would have one. |

looks like I"ll be pulling the switch tomorrow.
A little research on TGO says I should have another (Green?) wire going to my E-brake handle and I think I only have the ground right now.
I figure I'll do that at the same time.
Tony...I think I left my Wire strippers at your house though. I can't find them anywhere. _________________

Might be different on a factory T5, but my auto only had two wires for the lights going into the shift switch: solid green and solid blue. |

| Green and Blue wires out of the harness go to the the reverse light switch. The green wire does not go to the ebrake. There is only one wire IIRC that goes to the ebrake and that's a wire that grounds out when the lever is lifted, to complete the "BRAKE" light circuit. |

Mine stays on periodically. Sometimes the contacts on the lever itself get funky. If i push my lever left or right it's intermittant on/off. |

| chris, keep in mind the sensor on your prop valve can also turn that light on. unplug it and see if the light remains on. |

then how do his brakes work? the rears would lock instantly, he would trail brake, and hit all kinds of stuff.
EDIT
yeah, see he has one.
unless he has removed it for some reason. |

Never looked directly at it. He said he didn't have one.
And it is called a Proportioning valve. |

you know, i was never real sure on that. i have been told that the stock units were referred to as a "combo valve" and the adjustable ones were called "proportioning valve". so they are all called "proportioning valve" then eh? good to know.
but yeah, without one you will have 50/50 brake pressure distribution. and since these cars are not at a 50-50 weight distribution, and since cars tend to transfer weight forward under braking that is not a good situation. you would end up backwards most of the time. |

I don't think that's accurate. One of the common mods is to remove the insides of the propvalve so that your rear brakes get full pressure. THere is a spring that regulates pressure to the rear. Lots of people just remove the spring and get better back braking without being too biased to the rear. |
