The further I get into my engine, the more it confuses me.....
It appears that I have a 305/267 casting on the Passenger side (#354434)
and a 350 head on the drivers side(#3932441).
the 434 casting is a 60cc chamber with a 1.72/1.5 valves, while the 441 head is a 76cc chamber with 1.72/1.5 valves.
both my SBC ID guide and http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm confirm this.
what the hell? would this effect compression ratio/detonation? The engine seems to favor a lot of mechanical advance (10-12 degrees). Could this be what's causing there to be such extreme blowby on the passenger side?
Could someone safely mill down the 441 heads to have a 60cc chamber?
The block has a casting of 3970010, which will at least come from the factory with a 4" bore.
I have a set of 882 heads which look like they're in usable shape, should I put them in and see what happens?
Maybe I have a 327?
Bobby? Did you do this with the heads?

I didnt do squat to the heads, all I did was put the ZZ4 intake on.
40 compression on one cylinder means dead cylinder regardless of head. I was informed it was a "GM crate 350", I'm sorry if I have been handing down misinformation |

No worries dude, no blame falls on you. I think you did the best you could to make that thing work. I remember You did mention once that there were 305 heads on there. I'd never taken down the casting #'s until lately. It appears you were half right. _________________

Someone could have worked both heads to be close to the same interms of valve size and chamber.

Compression on side vs side yes. Detonation? Depends on quench, etc etc etc.
The engine seems to favor a lot of mechanical advance (10-12 degrees).
That's not alot depending on what your total is

No. Timing has nothing to do with blowby. Blowby is blow by the rings....

Build your motor. Don't fudge with what's on there now.
The block has a casting of 3970010, which will at least come from the factory with a 4" bore. And large journal crank.

Wasting money on gaskets. $20+ a pop, plus intake, plus exhaust, etc.
Maybe I have a 327?
I vote no. |

Poorly constructed sentance on my part, for what my actual thought was. Sorry. Basically I'm wondering if why that bank is putting out more blowby gas, was because that particular head has smaller combustion chambers.

Wasn't planning on it, just wondering if maybe, as you pointed out, a previous owner milled down the 441 casting so they'd have roughtly the same size combustion chamber

Wasting money on gaskets. $20+ a pop, plus intake, plus exhaust, etc. | Good point. It runs now at least, and requires a rebuilt as is. Why band-aid it? _________________
