It's not the hinge, it's the hinge pins. There is a kit by TDS that cures it. Spendy, but cheaper than new hinges. I did this to my left door and couldn't be happier. I did get the greasable kit though.

You also might want to consider getting this tool. Makes removing and reinstalling the detent spring easy.

The upper hinge is welded on. But you can buy a rebuild kit from Lon at www.top-downsolutions.com They're kind of spendy. I went with the non greasable kit myself. Figured if the first time lasted 275k miles, why would I need a greasable unit. The lower hinge rebuild kit is cheap, and you can pick it up at most parts stores.

Doing the same thing with the 89 shortly. I have the pins to put in, just need to recruit some help to hold the door straight while I loosen the upper hinge (if needed). Using the floor jack to lift the rear edge of the door.

an engine hoist helps. Very Happy

i installed the greasable hinge kit on the drivers door of the six a few years ago. one piece of advice, do not get the "deluxe kit" that comes with the grease gun, the grease gun is a piece of garbage, it broke before i put one tube of grease through it. i have the second hinge kit still, i am planing on installing it on the drivers door of the GTA, then i was going to buy two no greasable ones for the passenger doors of both cars.

another piece of advice, using the dremel tool for this SUCKED, find a better tool. it is too small for a grinder to fit, but there must be something....

How did you pound the pins out? Mine are kinda stuck in there and I can't seem to get leverage on it.

I may be old........but I'm quick Wink

I used a carbide burr on my long die grinder to knock the heads of the top rivets off. Took about 15 second per rivet to grind them down this way. Had to be really careful not to take off too much.

I used my craftsman roto-tool. It will hold die grinder bits, and also has a flex shaft that holds dremel type bits. Has alot more power then a die grinder. I used it for porting my heads on the truck too.

An electric drill turns about 2k rpm. A die grinder turns 20-30k. You'd be all day trying to get a drill to grind anything.

BTW the tool can be had for $59. But it doesnt come with any of the cool attachments. I bought mine on a sale for $79 then bought the flex attachment later. You can also get a right angle grinder/cutter attachment. That I dont have but wish i did. Looks like a nice panel cutter.

cool. 20-30K rpm is nice. i think my drill needs a transmission. Very Happy

thanks for the advice Brandon, i more question, where can i get this tool for 59$ ?

EDIT
Duh without all the "16-in-one" stuff it's way cheaper.

Did the driver's door today. $6 for the pin & bushings and $10-$15 for a spring tool. Used a floor jack to lift the trailing edge of the door, undid the upper hinge, then got the door positioned so the pin loose in the hole (really bad sag), and pulled the pin up with a set of channel-lock pliers. Looks like I have to replace the detent roller now too, it doesn't roll.

For those looking to do this, the pin & bushings are in the "HELP!" section, the ones they sell for our cars is part # 38402. That was too small for my car and I had to use the oversized kit, part # 38407. I also highly advise getting a door spring tool, makes life much easier.
