My IROC originally had the stock-style oil cooler with the round plate above the filter and the two fittings for engine coolant. Some previous owner deleted the whole mess, but left the portion above the oil filter. This leaves my extra-tall oil filter sitting at around the same level as my oil pan.

Is it a good idea, or even possible to delete the plate and run the filter dirrectly off the pump like every other small block? I figured I'd mess with it while I have everything torn down and the flexplate is out of the way.

you can just remove the two bolts and it should spin off.

IIRC you need to get an oil filter adapter piece/bolts from a block w/o the cooler. That's what I did when I removed mine.

I imagine you could get it over the counter but boneyard SBC would be fine.
