|
|
So as I was getting the car up in the air today, I was kinda looking up into the airbox, and debating if I should bother with a CIA.
Right now I have the dual-snorkle TPI-style setup pulling through K&N's, gutted airboxes, and a stock descreened MAF. Would I see any benefit from running the typical intake tube to the battery tray with a cone filter, or will the stocker work fine? |

no or almost no benefit. that is the best possible design for a free-flowing intake, well, without cutting up your hood. |

| Okay, thanks Tony. I figured it would get a pretty cool source of air, away from the engine/ect. However I was wondering about the narrowing over the radiator, and the added heat from the rad itself. |

I didn't cut up my hood!
With 300+ HP on the ground, you'd see some gain with a 3.5" tubing setup off to the side ONLY if you ditched the MAF.
The maf will be the big restrictions.
Up until then, K&N with gutted air boxes and removing all the baffling below will be best. |

| Yeah, some previous owner actually did a pretty good job of gutting everything, and it's a straight-shot down below the filters. |

i have always wondered that as well. one thing to keep in mind, the Firebirds 5.7L TPI was rated at 5HP LESS then the IROC due to the only difference in the engine designs, the air cleaner assembly. it's a small price to pay for a sexy front end.
you have done the best thing, gut the lower section and run good air filters. i suppose if you wanted too you could remove the "Y" section and lay down a little bit of insulation, then re-install it. i don't know how much heat transfers through the ABS plastic now, but if you cut that down it would cool your incoming air.
just a thought, i am no engineer. (which shows if you look at my air-intake on my six |

Just do this. Get on a dyno. Make 2 runs. Pull the air cleaner off. Make 2 runs.
Did you get more power?
If you answer yes, install larger intake tract.
If no, leave alone. |

that was for basis on a v6 engine, tested by a board member here.
Since he has a 350, and unsure of mods. He may benifit from redoing it. |

| Could you take a piece of 4" PVC tube, heat it in the oven, then squish it down so you can make it route like the dual-snorkle? |
