I don't know much about the Vats stuff. Is it true that all 89 Camaros have that feature? I have a 89RS that only has a standard key. i bought it from someone and he said that it would crank but not fire. He said that it wouldnt get fuel unless you use a jumper wire. Well he tore the entire dash out looking for a problem. I am thinking the problem might just be that its the wrong key. He said he got it that way so I think someone else lost the key and figured it was broken so sold the car to him. Its not a big deal to me because I will be ripping all the computer stuff out and running a carb and standard ignition. I would like to get it to run to see if the 2.8 is any good. Also does the bell housing on the 5 speed come off and can I just get a V8 bell housing? Thanks

the 60*V6 uses a different engine block bolt pattern then the SBC/BBC and 90*V6s. your 2.8 bellhousing WILL NOT interchange with a V8 bellhousing.

you should be able to go to the dealership and get a key made for that (with VATS chip) for around 30$.

but if you do not care then just do the ol' VATS bypass. there is a tech article on TGO. since you do not have the key you will have to test all the resisitor sizes to see which one will work.

here is the tech article. http://www.thirdgen.org/vats
and here is the article that lists the 15 different resistor sizes. each one of these is less then $1 so you should be able to buy them all and guess check to find out which one will work.

also i would go to the junkyard and cut the harness off of the column (just the vats wires) and hook your resistors up to that rather then ruining the wiring in your car.

good luck.

Thanks for the info. The bell housing thing I was asking is if i can just get a V8 bellousing for the 5 speed. I know the 6 bell housing wont bolt up. I was needing to know if the bell housings come off or not. I havent looked at it, being its outside in the rain. Been dealing with these cars that the bell housings are part of the transmissions.

The V6 T5 will bolt right up to a V8 bellhousing. Problem is with the clutch since the V6 tranny has a 1" - 14 spline input and the V8 has a 1 1/8" - 26 spline input. You either have to run a 9.25" V6 clutch disc or have a custom 10.4" V8 disc made with the center hub for the V6 tranny input shaft. Also the V6 tranny has differant gear ratio's. Seems like 1st gear is 3.5:1 where as the V8 T5 is 2.95:1. So the V6 tranny ratio's will be wider since both transmissions will end up 1:1 in 4th. I don't know if there are any differances with the 5th gear ratios. I know that with the V8 T5's there were two differant 5th gear ratio's. Mine has the 0.63:1 overdrive which is nice when running low gears in the rear end.

i never knew the v8 t5s had more then one 5th ratio. I bet my WC-T5 has the higher 5th as well... my GTA will be at 1200 in 5th at 55MPH.

I think the WC-T5 has a 0.7x:1 fifth gear?

Either way, I think somewhere in the High 3 series for rear gears is great with the way the V8 T-5's gearing is spaced out.

Which is why I bought me a 3.73 rear!Very Happy
