instructions for reinstalling timing chain
1. install trhe crankshaft gear about 1/2" from crankshaft stop.
2. position chain on cam gear and slide chain and cam gear onto crankgear and camshaft.
3. install camgear retaining bolts and tighten.
do I press the crank gear on the rest of the way? I think I should but I don't know if itr is suposed to self center or anything.... |

Usually you have to press them on. I would say you have a problem if you were able to just slip it on _________________

| Usually you can whack it on with a hammer. Getting them off usually with a puller. |

yeah, i used a puller to get it off and a hammer on a socket to get it on.
have the new timing gear set on, and i have all my gasket areas scrapped, i have yet to drop the oil pan, i have to pull the starter to get to the last few bolts. thats 1st on the agenda tomorow, then i just have to make sure3 my can and crank are alighned and button her back up.
QUESTION: on a 60* engine... if the rotor is pointing at piston number one that means that the piston is at top dead center on the igniton stroke right? the dizzy goes around ONCE per power stroke right, meaning it sparks number one and the next time the rotor passes number one it is sparking again right?
took a crap ton of pictures. i'll see about posting a few up. |

The Cam turns once for every 2 crank revolutions which results in the 4 stroke process.
So yes, if it's pointing at #1 (not the physical cylinder, but the #1 post on the cap) then it's about to or just did fire. |

Thanks Paul. i had done that and for some reason my piston was NOT top dead center. on a 60* the timing marks should be aligned when #1 is top dead center (cam mark at high noon and crank at 6) my cam mark was not quite high noon, but the crank was a liitle too far off. I don't know if the timing gears on there were marked wrong or if i had jumped a tooth or two. seems like there would be some evidence of that though... maybe i just screwed somthing up.
meh... i'll get it figured out before i put the timing cover back on.
EDIT* here is a shot of the alignment (thought #1 was TDC) when i pulled the chain. lucky for me both the cam and crank gears can only go on one way, since i did not move the cam or crank with the chain off i have not thrown them out of alignment.

Does your crank gear have more than one mark?
You line the marks up together.... Cam at 6 and Crank at 12. It's actually kinda hard to be off by a tooth. Not 100% sure... but on a SBC THIS IS NOT TDC OF THE FIRING STROKE FOR #1!
Sure, line the marks up that's how you install the gearset... but you need to turn the motor over another revolution, otherwise you'll be 180º OfF |

That depends on your picture. What if when you pull the old chain off, the cam moved and now you're off a tooth?
What I do when replacing the gear... is turn the motor until both marks line up... then take the chain off.
Then when I put the new one on... I can be sure the marks are lined up. No questions. |
