I think I say this every year but this time I'm serious!
Last year my plans to ship the Firebird fell through when the car and trailer exceeded the capacity of the hitch on my parent's motorhome by a measly 500 lb. They didn't want to tow it 2500 miles being any amount over capacity so they came for a visit without the car.
This year my wife and I are making a summer road trip back home to Washington. The difference is that we both agree this will be my last and final opportunity to get the Firebird since we probably won't drive back home again. So my wife agreed that we're going to sell the Jeep and replace it with a 3/4 ton truck. I'll be purchasing a trailer in Washington and loading up the 'Bird with all the goodies!
Dare I say that the QwkTrip car could be burning rubber by the end of the year?!?! |

Dang. I was really hoping one of these day's, you were just going to descide you couldn't sell the car, and just give it to me, so at least it could be driven.
That is really cool though. Its too bad it is going all the way to illinios, ever since I started hanging out in the car, I kept hoping to see it run. |

I'll keep an eye out for a trailer Jon. Good news though, will be nice to see you finish the project some day. I was always interested but did not insult you with low ball offer
It was the new garage feature that did it wasn't it? hehe

EDIT: Oops, read too fast. Guess you are looking for a truck not a trailer. _________________ Red Sled: 89 GTA, 383, TKO, N2O

You aren't kidding; trailers are expensive. I'm not sure exactly what I want but I am leaning towards an 18 foot flat bed (no dovetails) with electric brakes. I have to tow 2500 miles of highway so it has to be a little better than something I would use around town or for short trips.
I looked into renting before and there are couple problems. Most rentals are too narrow for the track width of my car due to my wider wheels and tires. The book might say my car can fit but it can't - I've tried. The other problem is the places that do have wide enough trailers also require that you rent a 14 foot truck for cross-country towing. They won't let you tow long distance with your own truck. The third problem is that one-way rental is expensive. I can buy and sell a new trailer and lose less money than renting.
Any suggestions are welcome. I've never purchased or even used a car trailer before. I always drove to the track. |

the reason i was asking, is i bought plans to build a 20ft tilt flatbed for myself, i just havent had the extra $$$$ to do it yet
when i priced it out for all the parts, it was gonna run about $2000, at my reduced cost just for all the materials.
i too want electric brakes for mine
this is a tandem axle rated at 7000lbs
trailers like this usually go for around $3500 or so.
as im a welder, its not that big of a deal for me to build it
i havent really looked around at usued trailer prices, so i dont know how it compares to that
ill have to dig up the plans & see how wide they are, i dont recall

Definetely a used truck. I would prefer a diesel but I think my budget will dictate a gas engine. Hunting for a cheaper yet reliable truck will be a real challenge. It is extremely difficult to get a good used truck more than 5 years old in Illinois because of the all the rust from winter road salt and humidity in summer. Back in Washington or Oregon you could find a 1997 Ford F250 with a Powerstroke in decent condition. Virtually doesn't exist here. Everything is a pile of junk by that age. So I'm forced to look at newer trucks with a hefty price tag.
Now that I've been looking around I have found that I can't afford to keep a newer truck so I will probably end up buying a 2WD tow rig and sell it after I get back. In an emergency I could always tow with the Jeep just to get the Firebird to a shop in town. If I do happen to find a killer deal on a good 4WD truck then I would probably sell the Jeep and keep the truck. But it is highly unlikely that will happen. |

I've had great luck with my 96 Ford diesel, they kick ass for towing.
Maybe you should fly out here and buy the pickup and trailer. A good clean 10 year old diesel might bring top dollar back there when you get done with it. |

My pop's got a 97 Ford F250. Come the 1st of january he's got nothing but time. What kind of $ are you looking to pay out? He might do it just for the hell of it and the experience. He's got a Flat Bed trailer.
If everyone bails out, I'll talk to him. Chances are if there's a good payout involved, he'll do it. _________________

I appreciate the ideas. I'll keep them in my mind as options. I am planning on taking the trip regardless as part of my vacation next year. Picking up the car is a side bonus and combining the two activities helps offset the cost of transporting the Firebird.
Last year I looked seriously into buying an older truck from Washington and selling it in Illinois. Sounds like a good idea on paper but I found it was a real hassle trying to evaluate a truck from 2000 miles away. Every seller seems to be in denial about the delapidated condition of their vehicle. It's very risky buying without seeing. I have friends that could help me but I feel guilty sending them out to look at truck after truck after truck. |

Hey, how did that crossmember work out anyway? Did everything bolt in like it should? Do the steering linkages clear? |
