Relocated the battery to the back and put 200 miles and 3 passes at the track on it.
Since then it's sat and been started up 4-5 times just to move around from the garage to the driveway. Sometimes it sat in the rain. No big deal right?
So I went to change the antifreeze and was idling the car. About 5 min into the idle, the car died. No sputter, just off. Like a key.
Went to start it again. Nothing.
Few minutes later, fired right up. Idled for another 5min or so, maybe shorter. And it died.
Put her away.
Added two more ground straps and tried again today.
Idled for about 5min, and died.
Wouldn't start. Pulled the coil wire off the coil and tried cranking over and didn't see any spark. Went into the garage and grabbed the DVOM, tried to crank again and saw spark. Hooked the coil wire back up and she fired. Put her back in the garage and left for work in the Jeep.
What the hell? |

ignotion moduel failing when it gets hot is my gut reacrion. that is if it cranks and does not start.
connect a test light to the tack wire and see if it flashes while cranking if it does then it is the coil if it does not then moduel or pick up coil |

I was thinking module too.
I've got one of those inline spark testers. I'll put that on, plus fuel pressure gauge, and the test light to the tach wire... coil - right?
And fire it up and see what happens. |

| if you have injector puls and the test light atached to the tack wire does not blink then it is the modul it their is no injector puls and no blinking then it could be the pick up coil or moduel. if it does blink and the injectors have pulse width then it is most likely the coil. |

So I tried a new module, didn't fix it.
Check some wiring. Found a loose wire. Fixed the wire, didn't fix the problem.
Bypassed the MSD.... car runs and doesn't die!
Tune is definitely different without the MSD. It's amazing how tempermental this engine is.
So I took her for a drive and she zinged up to god knows what RPM REALLLLY fast (no tire spin) and then broke up. Felt like a rev limiter. Atleast I hope that's what it is! LOL No msd/no tach the way I have it right now. Need to put the laptop on and see if It's actually reving up to the c950's 6700rpm rev limiter. If so, that's another 700RPM of pull!
Called MSD... they gave me a list of part numbers for coils, and said I should call jacobs and have them tell me how to test their coil.
I called Jacobs, guy told me how to test coil, and also said that if the car runs with the MSD disconnected, it's not the coil. That's what I figured too.
So I mailed the MSD in today. We'll see if I get it back intime for dyno and or what is wrong with it.
Sigh. Stupid aftermarket. |
