To avoid making a billion new threads over the next few weeks I thought I'd condense into one thread.

Well, I've been working on this thing for a week now and man what a long week it has been. I have gotten tons of work done and the project is making huge steps. I just hope I can keep it up for the next few weeks!

Today I took out the starter and tested it and found it is bad Sad I also removed my old electric fuel pump, which i replaced last summer with an after market one outside the gas tank, and bought a mechanical one instead. My fuel pump has been giving me problems forever and I finaly decided to just get rid if it!

Then I started doing actual bondo work on the driver's side. I found that the driver door and fender where pretty bad before I got ahold it. That's going to be a fun project Mad Its ok though, she's comming along fine.

Thanks for checking out my project and leaving your feedback, I'll be uploading new pictures about every other day to keep you all posted so check back offten!

~JAKE
Just a before pic for reference

This is a pic of what my buddy did with a sharpie while i was in the bathroom, maybe an idea to toss around

Thumbs up

Did the 83's come with an in-tank, or the old-school on-the-block pump?

If its a small block and its not Cross-fire, it should be a mechanical pump.

it's also NOT the original engine. he is rollin a 5.7 now, but as it is carbed i would imagine that he has a mechanical pump.

IIRC some of the carbed third-gens had in-tank pumps. However if he did an engine swap to a pre-86 non-CC carb engine, it's probably a mechanical block pump, yeah.

AFAIK, if you had a carburated 3rd gen V8, you had a mechanical pump. If its CFI, TBI, or TPI, you had an in tank pump with an electric up front. I've only seen TBI and TPI cars in detail about this, so I don't know if some CFI cars had mechanical pumps up front. I wouldn't imagine so.

I've heard a lot of post 86 Small blocks aren't even machined for the fuel pump rod in the block. I'm kind of intrested in tearing apart an L98 in a F body car to see if this is true.

Indeed.

while were talking about changes in the small block....anyone know if you can interchange heads between the 57-86 motors and the 86+ gen 1's? (I.e. are the bolts that secure the head to the block all positioned the same?)

I don't think so. I know the gaskets are different.

The only differance is the angle for the center intake manifold bolts. Supposed to be able to fix that with a die grinder.

My 87 LG4 car has both a mechanical pump and low psif(1 to be exact) in tank pump. Some 86's also got this system. The electric pump pumps fuel up to the mechanical pump through a 3/8s line. Then it basically t's in the pump and returns via a 5/16" line. This creates a slight positive pressure at the mechanical pump intake. The mechanical pump then pumps the fuel up to working pressure. GM did this to cure a vapor lock problem the earlier cars had. I've also heard that they released this as a kit to be installed on the earlier cars for warranty complaints.

CFI cars are basically TBI cars. Only the throttle body is split in 2 seperate pieces(uses 2 2.5 duke tb's). So yes it requires an in tank pump.

Late model heads will in fact fit on early blocks. No problem. As was stated the only differences are the valve cover/gasket and the angle of the center intake holes. I have Mike's old L98 heads on the 80 350 in my 70 truck. I used the early intake as well, just ground out the holes so I could start the bolts and tightened it down.

LT1 heads are the first ones that won't fit. But with some modifications(welding) people have made them fit.

"Correctomundo! Look at the brains on ...tony" It had a crossfire 305, then some guy put a carbed 350, then i bought it and had problems with the intank fuel pump, so i tore it out and bought a mechanical one instead. Haven't bolted it on yet though, took a day off for Father's Day. I'll pick up my new battery tomorrow as well as my new starter. Then I'll hope she fires up. I'll be sure to keep you all posted.

So I have the driver door almost done, the hood is all blocksanded and lookin good. It had these wierd pimples along the middle of it, kinda strange. I have the gash on the driver rear fender fixed. I started doing body work on the passenger side today and found out it was far from perfect like i hoped Razz but oh well.

All in all, things are progressing great! Thanks for all your support, it's what keeps me motivated Very Happy

So today I figured out what is wrong with my tire that keeps going flat. The tire was brand new so I took it back into Discount Tire Co, where I bought them, and had them look at it. Turns out my centerlines are actually 2 pieces of aluminum just rivited together and it is leaking in that crease and out the lugnut holes Shocked So they took the tire back off and gave everything back to me so I can fix it. I have a plan to patch it all back up with some silicone and a wheelbarrow inertube.

Also I started doing body work on the passenger side, except the door cuz i don't want to find out how many dings are in that thing. I finalized the hole was left by the rear windshield wiper arm and that looks great. I removed the flappers on the hood so i can clean them up and get them to work again, although now that they're off i kinda like the look of just having 2 holes in my hood. I also just put a few more layers of bondo on other damaged areas. I'm pretty satisfied with my accomplishments for the day. Smile
