WARNING! POLITICAL!!!!
with that out of the way...
i do not know how many of you follow "the hill", but this is an issue that affects EVERYONE on this board. it effects your access to the internet. i am not going to turn this into a firefight, i am not going to take a stance (though you can probably guess) i am just going to post a link to a sight that has info about this bill and who is for/agianst.
a few sites against the bill. the seek a "no" vote, which would keep things the way they are now:
http://www.savetheinternet.com/ a coalition against the bill
http://www.google.com/help/netneutrality.html
google shares thier views, disguised as a middle of the road explanation.
i cannot actualy find a website/coalition for the bill, but i do know it is supported by prety much every telco company (verison leads the way, comcast and many others are also on the "YES" team)
here is a news bit that does a good job of giving an unbiased opinion of both sides of the issue.

| It affects speed, not access. They still cannot block you, but they can slow you down if server hosts dont pay up. It's bullsh*t, but it wont hurt most people in the long run. |

| unfortunatly the language of the bill is not toatally clear on that. there is no specific text saying that they cannot block out access totally (not that i think they would), in fact, the 1st link specifically lists that as a concern in their "FAQ" section. now, as i am not involved in there campagn, nor am i a quialified anything i can not say if t is a real danger, but the coalition for internet freedom seems to think it is. |

It's just another lobbying group, except they're on the side of Google, and pretty much any large internet company. You gotta understand that this is not so much an issue of access and eavesdropping, as it is who is responsible for the cost: the provider, or the customer.
Obviously Verision, Comcast, ect. are;t going to lose a damn dime to this, so it basically becomes an issue where either you pay more for service, or you get slow load times for hosts that refuse to subsidise your cheap fast service.
Don't get me wrong Tony, I'm against the new bills 100%. I think that the cost should be the responisibilty of the customer, even if it does raise prices. However I think the whole spiel of "It's the end of the internet! The Sky is falling! They have WMD's!" is all over-blown BS. |

one of the funiest bits over this was on the daily show. look it up on u-tube. it is worth the 6 minutes.
and yeah, this won't be the end of the internet, but i would rather pay a bit more for my ISP in the name of freedom. but i am a young idealistic hippie, so it comes with the territory |

Let me just start off by saying. "The internet, is like a series of tubes...."
OK, all joking aside.
This is a VERY complex issue. Who is google really looking out for? Do you really think their FUD propoganda, is solely to protect you?
The bill is VERY vague on a lot of issues. Most of the bill comes down to FCC control, and who really owns the copper, and who has access to the said copper.
I agree, that it is sort of a BS bill, it does have a couple of good points, but is way to vague to be usefull. Just remeber, the internet is a huge thing, it would be almost impossible for the FCC to police, and the effects of this bill, will probably not be knowing for years down the road. I really suspect it won't effect the end-user much, and that all of the FUD you hear, is buisness' trying to protect their current buisness model. |
