so, after my 2nd run with the vee-six chris and i noticed a valve rattle sounding noise. well, now that i drive the car when there are not 200 cars reving their engines in the area i can hear it... it is BAD! comes in whenever i am above 1/4 throttle. we figured out that it was the rear most cylindar in the passanger side (same place i have an exhaust manifold leak). anyway, so now i need to pull my valve covers and re-set my valve lash.

....who knows why that is a PITA on a MPFI 60* engine...? anyone? anyone? ..... because you need to remove the entire upper and lower intake manifolds to get to them Rolling Eyes thanks GM. anyway... i will probably be tackling that tomorow, i have never actualy done thison an american car before, did it on my sazuki samurai once. if anyopne has any usefull tips or tricks i would love to hear them. thanks.

..... my car just healed itself? ... the noise is now gone. no matter how high i rev the engine, or how much load i put on it (4th up a hill at 20MPH) i can not replicate the issue. i'll try it again late tonight and see if i can replicate it with a cold engine.

The way I did it on the LG4 when I put budgetracers old heads on it was to rotate the motor over to the intake stroke with #1 at TDC. I didn't remove the lifters out of the block so everything was in place there. I'm not sure what the proper procedure is if you have to remove the lifters and replace them.

with hydraulics I didn't spesifically set lash. All I did was tighten each rocker arm nut down until the pushrod seated on one side and the tip that hits the valve made enough contact where I couldn't get a .020 feeler gauge in there. After that I turned an extra 1/2 turn on each one.

DISCLAMER: I don't know how "correct" my method of setting lash on a hydraulic system is, its just the way I was taught. Point of fact: my 305 seems to have a compression problem and a detonation problem at WOT.

cool man. It might have been just an oil starvation issue. I've noticed it a lot on 3.1's when they're cold. My mom's Oldsmobile does it when you first start it up. When you drive it for a few minutes, it goes away.

Might have been a heat thing. What viscosity oil do you run?

10-30 i think.

ok, so if the problem does not kreep up again (like tonight when i drive it COLD) i will not worry about it. i will consider it a fluke brought on by running the engine HARD and disregard it.

however, if the problem persists on a cold engine what should i do? the engine never did it when cold before, therefore it is not "normal" on my 2.8, and i would like to get rid of it (the problem, not the 2.Cool.

Personally, I'd adjust the valves anyway, just cause it would drive me insane thinking that something was wrong.

Why'd you race that beater six anyway? Too many miles for that kind of thing.... Laughing

two reasons.

1. until now i had NO way of measuring the cars performance. and this is cheaper then a dyno.

2. i recently picked up a t-5 swap for my GTA and wanted to see how to launch a stickshift car on somthing W/O enough power to damage the tranny incase i did somthing realy stupid.

Hey, I got some prime real estate around town you can use to test it out without paying $25. Plus no one will b*tch if you sidestep it high enough to kick your rear end around. Very Happy

no, all fluids are topped whenever a low condition is observed.

C'mon man... you know if Tony is going to blow up his cars, it's going to be for a good reason. Razz

Besides, any problems you might have had with that Pinto are probably dirrectly related to the fact that it is a Pinto.... Shrug

ha! awsome. and a good point.

so i drove it again tonight COLD and the problem did not persist. however i believe i am going to re-set the valve lash anyway, just to be on the safe side. i have never actualy had the valve covers off of this car before, it will be a fun learning experiance. in addition to ensuring the wellness of my valvetrain, i am also hoping that with ther engine that torn apart i will be able to get a good enough angle on the manifold bolts to remove my exhaust manifolds. i have had a minor manifold gasket leak since i purchased the car in sept 2003, i tried to loosen the bolts once and was unable to do so due to the crampt nature of that side of the engine bay, however with all the other crap out of the way i believe i will be able to get that taken care of. all in all tomorow will be a productive day.

if anyone wants to help i will probably be getting started around 10am at my dads place in hillsboro. lunch is on me. PM for directions.

That is your ticky sound. Not the valve lash. Period.

If they're that loose, the gasket itself is probably already burned beyond usefulness.

Some of these cars don't have exhaust manifold gaskets. Mine didn't until I put in the new motor. Parts guy at West Bay told me this was common on some Chevy motors.
