Wondering if anyone else is having this problem.... 96 z28 ... its running real hot after I have been sitting at stop lights... has new thermo... new orange coolant... doesnt run hot while driving... but when I'm at a light it may hit 3/4 on the temp guage like 230 or something... anyways I'm sure its not supposed to get that hot... ? any ideas?
Thanks,

| I would have to check the specs on the 4thgens. Most thirdgen cars, had a t-stat in the 190* range, and the fans didn't kick on until 220*-230*, so when sitting, it isn't uncommon to get that hot. You need to find out what temps the fans come on in your car. You car will likely heat up to the fan temp when the car is just sitting. |

| Is this a new thing? If it's been like that awhile, John is probably right, these cars all tend to run hot stock. |

It's not lack of circulation that causes it to overheat at lights. Lack of cirulation causes overheating at high speeds. Low air flow is what causes overheating at lights.
Just ask the old-school Mopar guys about that one. |

My friend had a cooling problem with his 00 t/a the radiator is at a tilt and with the condensor on the front of the rad is possibly plug up with road debris it sucks it up from the road so clean between the rad and the condesor. _________________

Had to clean mine when I did the engine swap. Had road debris about 1/4 of the way up between condenser and radiator. Still approches 230* sitting in traffic, but when the fan comes on it cools down to about 200*. Cruising sees about 190* and loaded (i.e. climbing hills) approaches 220*. _________________ 92 Camaro

LT1 cars run hot. They use a revearse flow cooling system that cools the cylinder heads first and then the engine block. Didn't work that well. They will overheat on a hot day. Best thing to do is make sure you have a nice and clean radiator. Keep it clear of debris and dust. You can also add a new fan switch that will turn on the fans earlier than stock. This will also help.
One time in Chicago I was stuck in standing traffic in 100 degree weather. My '94 Vette convertible began to overheat. I had to turn the heat on full blast to keep going. Very very miserable time with the top down, sun beating on me, and the heater on full blast with pavement temps well exceeding 100 degrees. |

| You can also run a cooler t-stat, expecially if you chip it. My IROC has a 180* and a chip, and it never has ever gotten above 200*. |

| Cooler thermostats don't necessarily work well with LT1 cars. Do that as a last resort. |

My bad. I'm forgetting about the LT1's goofy cooling system. I skimmed your first post, and missed that part completely. |
