| if some fo your read my previous posts u know i was putting on a new carb and intake manifold. Well i burnt the starter out (was entirely my own fault) so we put a new one in, Car started up had a weird random clicking (it would click random no given pattern) then the radiator hose started leaking. shut the car off tightened it and now it wont start. Starter engages pulleys turn about 1/8 a inch and nothing. any ideas what this could be? (so far has new starter new distributor, new carb, new intake) i have till tomorrow afternoon to get it running or the apartment towes it away. Thanks in advance for any help. -chris |

| Try to turn the motor over by hand. I hope it didnt get too hot and blow a head gasket. You could by hydrolocked. If it is and does fire you could split cylinders, break pistons or bend rods.. If its hydrolocked pull the plugs and turn it over. The water will shoot out the bad cylinder. |

Stupid question, but I have to ask....
is it the right starter.....like say you have one for a 168 tooth flywheel and your flywheel is a 153 tooth? I'd also check all the connections and make sure everything is on there.
Next guess would be your starter solenoid, unless that got replaced too with the starter. _________________

Couple of ways water can get in there. There are water ports all around the cylinder where the water flows into the head. If you get the motor hot enough the metal expands and compresses the gasket more then normal. Then when it cools the gasket fits loose, water makes it way into the cylinder. Or the head could warp and the same thing happens. Or you get the motor hot and steam pressurizes the water jacket and blows a hole in the gasket to the cylinder. Or the gasket just plain rots away leaving a hole for the water to go through.
My reasoning on thinking this could be hydrolocking is that the motor tries to turn over but stops, and his leaky hose. The hose could have started leaking due to combustion gases getting into the water jacket and overpressurizing the radiator.
It still could be something completely else. |

Bring the starter back, have them bench test it for you, after that, if it turns out ok:
Pull the valve covers and make sure nothing's screwed up there in the valve train, if everything checks OK there, then take the spark plugs out of the cylinders and crank it, see if anything spits out (like coolant)... also check your oil level, make sure it's got a reading on the dipstick, and that the oil doesnt look like chocolate milk..
If all that it wants to move is an 1/8 of an inch at a time though even after these tests then check your battery cables, grounds, etc... it's either starter or something internal. If you get it to crank more than that, but it still wont start....
Make sure you are getting spark (a cheap 5 dollar inline spark tester from Schmucks should do the trick with a friend cranking), make sure the throttle isnt stuck closed. If everything checks OK there, spray some starting fluid in the carb while a friend tries to start it.
Nothing after that then mess with the timing (unless of course the car ran fine before, then the timing is probably perfectly allright). |

| Why? Did so much water get in that it ruined the bottom end? |

| If its just a pushrod you'll probably just need to replace it and the head gaskets. Unless you mean the piston rod is bent. Which is pretty easy to do if you try to start it hydrolocked. |
