I have some spare time on my hands, so I've been looking through old photo albums a bit. As I looked at pics from last summer I thought; "funny how much the new pic of Mars looks like the Oregon Star Party." I know, I know, you don't care. But in case anyone does, here's a comparison: No major difference except for the telescopes at the OSP site.

Now I see why we do "Mars Rover" races each year, lol.

Here's a couple pics from OSP that have nothing to do with Mars:
Sunset on the last day of event, picture taken with a digital camera

Same sunset, digital camera through a telescope (with no filter except the forest fire smoke)

And finally, here's a bird's eye view of part of the event. Someone brought a model plane equipped with a small camera, and it got some nice shots. My Camaro is the white car in the center of the gravel loop at bottom, and my campground is in the trees in the upper left. Smile

Nice pics.

do you happen to have a very hi-res copy of the sunset through the telescope picture?

i would love to have a picture like that in hi-res, and have it printed out.

LMAO Home decoration on the cheap - me likes! Very Happy

I can't take credit for that shot, but I'll ask David if he still has the original file. He saves everything, so I'm pretty sure he would. I'll let ya know. I hope you have one heckuva cool printer to pull that off! Shocked

OK John, David is bringing the original on CDROM to the Rose City Astronomers meeting this Monsay, so I will have it then. Cool

Paul, an old friend of mine made a large kite that had a camera on it too. People just seem to want to get aerial photos of the OSP any way possible. That plane was way cool though, since it was steerable and he could get more controlled photos than my friend with the kite/camera combo.

Hey Kelly, seeing how your an astronomy buff. My wife got me a telescope, 114mm Saturn. Anyway, I've only been able to use it a couple of days in 3 years. Too foggy/misty out here. Been thinking about getting rid of it. Any idea of value? and better yet know anybody who might want one?

Not too sure of value without ever seeing it and without knowing more than the aperture (I'm not familiar with the Saturn name, is that the brand or the model?). I would need to know stuff like: what kind of optical system it has (is it a refractor or reflector?), what kind of mount it has, what eyepieces, what optical coatings, what electronic options? Also, quality of craftmanship can make a huge difference (a used "Orion" brand refractor can sell for $50 while a used "Takahashi" brand refractor can sell for thousands).

If you want to sell it locally, you can place a free classified ad in the Rose City Astronomers monthly newsletter, and most all the interested people in town will see it. Give me as much info as you can, and I will try to give you a price range (or at least suggest other people to ask).

LOL Mark. Coincidently, on my astronomy email list we have been joking about that. We decided that NASA actually did go to Mars instead of faking it in central Oregon because an interplanetary trip was easier than dealing with Forest Service restrictions. FS has been pretty strict at the Oregon Star Party every August (mainly because of the fire hazard that time of year) and they have become the butt of many a joke lately. Smile

OK John, I got the original pic for ya, but David took it with his regular digital camera, not with his astrophotography setup, so it probably won't stand being blown up to tremendous proportions without some pixelization. We can fiddle with it though, see what happens. Smile

Yeah, I already have a decent 8x10 of it, and I think you could at least do 16x20 or so without problems. He said he tried it at Kinko's and it looked like crap (at the large size), but it came out great on his home computer at the same size (on a cheap printer) so maybe Kinko's is not the way to go. Confused

My stupid email won't allow attachments that large. I'll bring an extra copy to the dyno so you can both tinker with it Smile
