My red 87Z.... is ALIVE!
And I owe it all to Bart (TecherB.) No one... and I mean NO ONE knows more about installing, removing, disassembling and reassembling the Hitachi type gear-reduction starter.
There is more work to do, but mostly a minor cosmetics. Replace front carpet, hook up the burned wires from the amp to the radio, replace the driver's side inner fender at the back, new attenna... and it should be good to go!
Bart, you da man. Makes me proud to be a crewbie! _________________ "Are you guys ready? Let's roll."

| Yeah, the Bartimus Rocks! Glad to hear you guys got it going. Did you have any luck with the starter re-engaging itself? |

We used the old starter "block," the separate metal block where the two bolts on the starter go up into the bottom of the short block. Bart switched to the older one due to it's slight offset. Now, there is intermittent rubbing between the starter gear and the edge of the flex plate, but that is believed to be a result of the stiffer spring causing the starter gear to stay out an extra 1/8 inch or so. The strange thing at this point is that it will start, completely disengage, and then, after hitting the gas a little bit, it will occasionally make contact with the edge of the flexplate. But it's not engaging unless I'm starting the engine. I think the new assembly will loosen up soon and all will be well. _________________ "Are you guys ready? Let's roll."
