It's rapidly making the descent to POS, so I don't have any choice. It's breaking faster than I can rally the funds to fix it. |

I've dumped at least $5,000 in repairs/replacements over the last 5 years, what more can I be expected to do?
I can only do so much; things are now just getting out of control. I don't drive the car hard at all; it's incredibly rare it ever left 60 MPH.
at the older owners. People that don't know how to take care of a car don't deserve one. |

Sorry to say but $1000 a year is cheap to maintain a car. I was at a similar point a couple of years ago though. Was lookin at a car that needed motor, paint, interior work, tires, brakes, front end rebuilt etc. Started looking for a new car but fixin this one up slow ended up cheaper then a payment/insurance hike every month. Good luck whatever you do. |

Yeah... I was gonna say, 5,000 bucks over a 5 year period is pretty decent.
Any car you get is gonna cause problems, unless you buy something new.
Just remember:
Fast and Cheap is not reliable
Fast and Reliable is not cheap
Cheap and reliable is not fast. _________________

I guess I don't see how $1,000 a year on average on a car I've never modded can be considered "cheap."
But I guess that's just me.

Well, I did buy the car for $5,700.
EDIT: I should have added this information.
My mom and little brother are going to college soon, so I have to help cut costs wherever I can. Even though $1,000 a year for maintenance on the car may not sound like a lot, between 3 people going to college, and 2 home equity lines of credit to pay, every little bit helps at this point.
I guess if it's any consolation to myself, my dad is selling his 82 Vette too (CFI 350, 44,000 original miles, 4 speed auto, glass roof, original paint).
Until I get a promotion at work, we're just kinda stuck. |

Well.. you gotta do what you think is right, and I can't fault you for wanting to help out the family.
Although, just out of curiousity.. what is the problem with the car right now?

Here's the problems I'm having so far that I know of off the top of my head:
* Would like to upgrade the brakes to something harder; they've always been too soft, often giving that feeling that there's no brakes (even though I replaced the master cylinder, power booster, all 4 pads, and all 4 rotors 2 1/2 years ago),
* GODAWFUL fuel consumption for a TPI (out of gas after 120-140 miles),
* Torn seats,
* "Chevy salute," even though I had the valve seals replaced 2 years ago,
* Nasty grinding rubbing sound coming from the bellhousing area the minute the car is put into gear and starts from a stop,
* Radio is shot,
* Power antenna is broken,
* Deteriorating paint all over the place,
* Broken trunk motor,
* Retractor on the passenger front seat is broken,
* Very stubborn to start, even though I had done a full fuel system + injector + throttle body cleaning done last year, as well as replacing the fuel filter and using that exepensive Chevron Supreme (92 Octane) gas and using 1 bottle of their fuel system + injector cleaner once a year, and
* The car is beginning to have difficulty making right turns.
Now I know this may not seem like a big deal to some people that have ready access to a full-blown garage, but for those of us that have to have a shop do repairs like this to the car in addition to the regular scheduled maintenance, this gets incredibly expensive after a while, especially when you're one of two people bringing in a check for a family of four, and 3 of them are going to college. |

Laserbeak,
most of those problems actualy seem like pretty minor fixes, the gas milage is probably a $30 O2 sensor.
the brake feel is hard to fix, a firming pedal would be found by getting a larger MC, there is nothing that new parts is going to do to fix that.
the chevy salute just happens. although you could do valve seals again, that is something that i wouldn't be concerned about.
the hatch pull down is a $30 peice at most
some of the cosmetic/interior problems are going to cost more, but really going to another used car, you are going ot deal with the same things, after cars are run for several years, they have problems. cars require continued matanace, that is the nature of cars. |

Exactly, I mean unless you really plan on buying a new cheap car (chevy aveo). I would set aside 500 or so bucks, and just do a big one fix for your car.
Just fix the gas milage issue, and ignore the problems that are cosmetic and such.
Any car you get is gonna cause problems sooner or later. _________________

You want expencive, I want to get an LS1 . I might settle for an Lt1 but I was talking with shops and it would be less to put one in my car than to buy an LS1 car, but who knows. . I found out that going fast costs money. |

Good luck with the car/car hunt Jason. If you replace it, just make sure the replacement has more than 4 cylinder's. (preferably 8 )

Well, if you decide you want to keep it, let me know and I'll help you pound through all your problems. I'm not far from you geographically, and none of your issues are serious. We can hook it up to a scanner and find out what the deal is with your gas milage.
If you do decide to sell it, let me know how much you want for it. I could use a donor car. _________________ TunerPro Programmer

I get 23-24 MPG highway and 17-19 street, and thats pretty common for a no-mod or lightly modded TPI 3rd gen.
10 MPG (as you two are reporting) tells me something is seriously wrong... _________________ TunerPro Programmer
