|
|
I was wondering if anyone knows what oil pan to use for a 1 piece rear seal 383 that will fit into a third gen. I have heard that stock pans have to be kicked out to so the rods will c lear the sides of the pan. _________________ 85 Z28, 383 Stroker, TH350 tranny, Richmond 4.10 gears, dual exhaust

Can't guarantee that it will fit everything but I am using the Moroso 6 qt pan on my 1 piece rear main seal 383.
I will tell you that it does not leave as much room between the sump and bellhousing for the exhaust to be routed by. I am running a 3" diameter pipe off the header so it creates a bigger issue than when I was running the 2 1/4" pipe.

Is that the moroso pan made fo the 82-92 camaro/firebird? Do you have any clearence issues with the connecting rods hitting the pan? _________________ 85 Z28, 383 Stroker, TH350 tranny, Richmond 4.10 gears, dual exhaust

yes. no.
The only issue I had was that the windage try is below the add line on my dipstick. This was easily compensated for
What stroke are you planning on using?

k - same as me.
This is a 6 quart pan but like i alluded to, if you fill it with 6 your crank will be in oil. I run 5 quarts and everything is grand. (except for all these pesky folks still beating me at the track... that can be fixed though)

The crank scraper is a bit of a fittment problem. And do not use all the suplied studs on the windage tray.
Besides that one, you might give Canton a call, they make wicked nice oil pans, but they are on the spendy side. |

Crank scraper just required a LOT of trimming. And the other thing, ahem, no comment.

Thanks for the info. That pan is a lot cheaper than the Milodon pan I was going to get. _________________ 85 Z28, 383 Stroker, TH350 tranny, Richmond 4.10 gears, dual exhaust

wouldent it be good to have the crank in oil? or would that slow it down too much? also kick ass looking engine shultsy _________________ 86' firebird (Junked in 2015). 88' GTA (sold in 2020).

My understanding is (and I think I saw a slowmo video or animation of this) that when the crank is submerged in oil it acutally pics the oil up and it wraps around the crank like a rope. When you consider the rpms that we are talking about it can create quite a drag = loss of power.
I'm sure that those smarter than I will chime in and confirm or deny.

| There is a lot of resistance from it, that is a power loss. I would also assume it would be harder on the parts, as it puts a bending force on the crank, in a direction diffrent from the force of the rods pushing it. |
