Had a bit of the dyno curse myself. 2 days before dyno, Deb told me that the rear was starting to really make noise. Figured it had to be an axle bearing. Day of dyno I took it to work and racked it at lunch. Couldnt find anything wrong, so I went ahead and drove to Portland that night. Dyno'd the car anyway. Well dang thing sounded like I had big knobby 4x4 tires on it. So I knew something had to be wrong. Couldnt figure what, just 2 years ago I replaced all the bearings and installed a used auburn posi/28spline axles.
So today I had a bit more time. Took it to work and tore it apart. Really couldnt see any problem with the axle bearings, but I changed them anyway. Then I decided to install an SLP takeout Zexel/torsen posi to replace the worn auburn. Differential bearings looked good too, still had to change them for the new posi though.. hmm.. This far in I might as well check the pinion. On my car when you lift the car off the ground the rear u-joint hits the exhaust and won't turn. So i pried the exhaust over and pulled the driveline.. Turn pinion.. crunch, crunch crunch.. found it.. Outer pinion bearing was totally wasted. Chunks out of the race lots of rollers with pits and chunks missing. So now.. other then ring/pinion gears I again have a new rear end.
BTW, this rear used all the exact same shims as the last carrier. Which used all the same shims as the first. Not too hard to set up a rear when it works out that way. |

Good point... I wonder if that was your highspeed vibration B?
Sucks that the bearing died. Any reason why? Don't make me worry about mine! LOL But Deb puts alot more miles on it than I do! |
