Im still in love with my original xbox. Halo and halo 2.

I still get all Laughing from killing 8 year olds on xbox live.

As for 360, probably amazing, but I want to put 400 bucks into my car.

yeah i put up the retail display at some stores last month, got to play it a while back and i will say this:

yes its friggin amazing, but the jump up from xbox to xbox 360 is not as big as it was from, say super nintendo to n64, or n64 to xbox/ps2.

and the other thing, xbox 360 is tailored for HDTVs, if you dont got one, i dont know how much better its gonna look to tell you the truth, i mean, graphics are a bit better, played the king kong game, and that t-rex was awsome, faces are a lot more detailed, but you are going to lose some of that w/o an HD set.

also, have fun trying to get one. alot of the big retail stores are not even getting any on launch date, despite the fact they have displays, and the ones that are are not getting many, less then 100ish from what i understand. the one store that is getting the most is a total of 250.
unfortunatly i cant say what stores these are.

i think this unit is gonna be the hottest thing this christmas, and will probably end up on ebay for over a grand.

and yes, id rather spend the 400 dollars on my car at this point and time Razz

Was just talkin to my wife today while we walked through Fred Meyers. Years ago( 1976 i think) I was in freddies with my dad christmas shopping. Here was this huge display where they actually had a man standing there demonstrating this totally new idea. Video Games!! It was this fairchild system which I think was the first or very close video game console. Had pong, red baron, tictactoe, and a few other games. Real sweet controllers with it too. Think dad paid $450 back then for it. Every once in awhile dad would spring for a big ticket toy. I wouldnt get another till 83 when he got me an atari computer. So even though I had a game console before anyone else, I never did get a 2600.

Check it out http://www.classicgaming.com/gamingmuseum/channelf.html

Whoppin 64 bytes yes that's BYTES of memory. But the controllers worked like a regular joystick, but they were pistol grip. Plus you could twist the top for controls in 2 other motions and push the top down to fire. No buttons or other controls needed.

just incase anyone wants to know how much a byte actualy is, a byte (or "octet") is 8 bits. a bit is one binary digit (1 or 0) so this is a byte:
10101010

64 bytes:
10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010 10101010

thats all the info it could hold. Shocked

The previous is mostly true for the modern computers that you are working with but 8 bits to a byte is hardly a universal rule.

Bytes, byte-words and half-byte words have had various flavors through the evolution of the computer.

For example I have done quite a bit of work earlier in my career with Honeywell mainframes. Honeywell (actually GE but that is another part of history) utilized an 8 bit byte but included a check bit for a total of 9 bits per byte. There were others that utilized 6 bit or 7 bit bytes as well.

As far as video games, I was thinking about how cool Space Invaders and Asteroids were when the first machines showed up at stores (prior to the video arcades) as I was playing Forza the other night in all of it's surround sound glory Wink. We've come a long way baby. My only dissapointment for gaming is that I thought we would have been a lot further along with the virtual reality genre. Although if readily available I could see the productivity of the entire country coming to a standstill. Let's see, go to work or make love to a super model... hmmmm?

I saw yesterday that Atari has released a new version of the 2600. Includes 40 games and has the actual square controllers. Ergonomics be damned!! I don't know how many of those controllers i've worn out(hand my hands with it). Anybody else remember how to "repair" those controllers? Used to take them apart, slice the lamination off of the top fo the buttons then recurve the metal button. Stick it back down and put some tape over it. You were good to go awhile longer. The new box is like $30 or so.

Played with the xbox 360 friday night too a bit. SWEET! I've gotta get me one. The only complaint I have about modern games, why do they have to make things so complicated?? Come up with a game thats simple to play and doesnt need a whole keyboard full of buttons you have to remember please. I'm gettin old Wink I can't remember to shift Z spacebar to make my guy scratch his ass. Actually probably could remember that, too bad it wouldnt be useful. LOL
