so i finally narrowed down where my t-tops are leaking. the ONLY place on my 86 firebird i have ANY water coming in is the joint between the t-top seal (the one attatched to the top glass) and the window seal. only right at those two joints. unfortunatly this drops water right on my seat. i think i am going to have to use sillicone caulk to seal thios area together in a "permanent" fashion. meaning i will be unable to remove my t-tops with out breaking the seal. i will just have to carefully remove this silicone upon the arival of warmer weather.

pictures of this fix to come soon. along with pictures of some slight re-painting of a few bits of the car. rattlecan, so don't get too exited. Sad

well, i can only FIRMLY speak about my own car, but acording to all the other t-top owners i have talked too about leaks( addmitadly only a few), two TGO tech articles, and most of the v6 board on TGO, they usualy leak between the body and weatherstripping. if they usualy only leaked in between the window seal and t-top seal this would not account for all the ruined headliners or the rusted t-bar area that most leaky t-top cars suffer from.

unlike most stock setups i have sealed the rest of the weatherstripping to such a degree of awsomeness (read: 1.5 tubes of silicone) that the only conceivable place that water can still get in is between the seal-to-seal mating surface above my left leg. Sad and this is only due to the improper fit (or improper fitment during install) of my GM replacement weatherstripping. if it mated correctly this would not be an issue.

so in closing if between the t-top seal and window seal is the only place your t-top car leaks you have done a damn fine job so far, or gotten lucky enough to have a factory sealed car (a rare option Very Happy )

On my t-tops I cured 80% of my leaks by running a small bead of silicone where the metal trim meets the glass on top. Another leak source cured for me (not the t-tops) was when I just replaced the outer window sweeps. They were very hard and brittle, and my bump stops on the bottom of the window let the windows go down too far, and when they cam up it tried to rip off the outer sweeps. Also where the triangle meets the sweeps, they was a big gap because the oold sweeps had hardened and shrunk up creating a big hole there. The new ones come really close to completely sealing there, and a very small dab of silicone was all that was needed to seal up the small pin hole where the sweep met the triangle.

It's amazing how much difference the new sweeps made in the car. When I close the doors they sound firmer, and the windows roll up and down much easier, and wind noise from the windows is virtually gone now. This "fix" to me rates up there with SFC's. Made that much of a difference.

Not so weird. I'm fixing one like that - most likely a window regulator adjustment, was for me anyway because the driver side window didn't roll up far enough to meet the t-top seal.

Passenger side is a different story. That wide, hard plastic piece along the outer edge of the glass has started to separate and has a small crack near the front corner. The seal along the top of the windshield actually pushed against it when the latch was engaged. Came from repeated removal and replacement of the top. In the long run, I may be looking for a new passenger side top.

many times the t-tops leak because they're put on improperly, or part of the seal is folded over so it doesn't overlap the area where they meet.

right on the corners where the seal on the body will meet the seal on the t-tops.

I thought it was stupid at first, but after having somebody put my passenger side t-top on wrong, it made plenty of sense to me Embarassed

OMG! Mine leaks at the mirror triangle too! Maybe it has something to do with the Bermuda Triangle?

I fixed a lot of my leakiness by using a rubber conditioner (WD-40 and Meguires) to make the rubber seal with the glass a little better. It took care of all the leaks except for the Window Triangle and the rear upper corner. I still need to get more conditioner in there. The rubber is a little dry.
