I thought 5.3 and 4.8 were same bore, and the 4.8 is the oddity with the shorter stroke. I can see guys going crazy with boost wanting the shortened stroke of the 4.8 over the 5.3, on the small motors with boost, RPM is probably a big part of the game. |

Yes, the 4.8 has the same bore as the 5.3.
I don't see a preference for the 4.8 anywhere, if anything people prefer the 5.3 for quicker spool. They make almost identical power, but the 5.3 shifts the curve a couple hundred RPM lower. Either will rev to 7k and make 800whp completely stock with good valvesprings and proper cam/turbo choice. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

The 4.8 also has the shortest dwell time, so more detonation resistant.
All of this is far above what any of us are yahoos are building. Buy motor, install in car, problem solved. |

That takes the fun out of attempting to over engineer something until you realize you under engineered your budget. |

Ya. I tend to overtime and over anyalise everything. And the motor I was looking at had no trams with it. From what I seen at pull apart I can get motor and transfer for about 5hat price. Cheap. |

You guys read better than I do. I thought he asked why people go for 4.8 or 5.3 so often (instead of a 6.0L - implied). |

Hey, costs the same if you find one at PnP.
Keep an eye out for Express vans, 03+ 2500 often have the 6.0L and they don't get picked over as often as trucks. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

What about as far as parts needed for the swap? I was gonna leave truck intake and accys on for awhile until I get enough coin for ls intake and so on. I need to do this fairly soon wither next few months. I don't have a place to park or store Camaro right now so trailering it every couple weeks or months will get old and expensive fast as well as the storage coats for it |

Engine mounts, exhaust fab, gauges, high pressure fuel system, harness and PCM, F-Body oilpan. If you use an old-school 700R4 you need to get a TV linkage and some crank spacers and junk. 2wd 4L60E ought to just bolt in and hook up with all stock stuff, but you need a torque arm relocation unless it's from a '98-'02 F-Body or you get the F-Body tailshaft.
Truck accessories and intake don't fit under a thirdgen hood, so to put a hood on you'd need the F-Body stuff. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

I'm gonna blow the doors off of my own usual rhetoric here and, for the second time this week, say that someone should stick with a gen-I SBC.
If your goal is to get a running, driving car as quickly and cheaply as possible this is your best bet in my eyes:
-Find a Vortec SBC from a truck. Junkyard or CL.
-Slam a dual-plane intake on it. Again, CL or whatever.
-Find a 4150 (or a 4160 and a rear plate kit) get one cheap and rebuild it yourself, the kit is like $35.
-Find a junkyard 700.
Whole thing will cost you around $600-700 and take two weekends at most. 250hp easy, no wiring, no buying mounts, no driving around without a hood. Done deal. |

I'm with Aaron on level of effort, especially on a time crunch. The LSx is definitely more involved. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

No, the project took 4 years. It sat untouched the rest of the time. |

Hey buddy, by my book a project begins when the car comes off the road and ends when it drives under it's own power. By my reckoning you started your LS swap before LS engines even existed. You're the original LS hipster. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

I'm no pioneer. I had small block and big block back then and didn't even think about LS until more recently. Half the Crew has parts from my small block sell out. |

Man, all I'm trying to do is make a joke over here. It won't be funny if I have to explain it though. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Worn out already??? Now imagine how worn out the joke is getting on me.
I was making you feel awkward on purpose. I"m just really tired of those jokes because the joke doesn't work without an underlying premise of inadequacy. After a certain amount of time the premise speaks louder than the joke. Fact is, I was off doing responsible grown-up things most those 20 years. Things are looking pretty good these days and it is time to have some fun with the car!!! |
