Had to use a pullup resistor on the tach signal to make it work tonight. From what I was reading online, '411 PCMs up until '02ish had an internal tach pullup, but the 03+ P59 PCMs like I have in the truck left the pullup resistor out in the interest of cost savings since no GM vehicles in that era had a tach that didn't run off of the Class2 data bus.
Basically only cruise, A/C and electric fan wiring left before I slam the front end and exhaust together and recover the interior bits to finish up the project. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Did you slam a cooling system in it and take it down the road yet?? _________________

No. I did get every last bit of wiring done tonight though.
Core support and cooling system comes this weekend, then it's time for an open header romp through the neighborhood. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

Haha. This thread makes me wanna do an ls square body. So I been reading. Seems like the biggest snag for something I would do would be the 4wd. Apperenty from what I been reading the issues are with transfer case fiitiment |

It's coming along. Need to figure out how to mount my electric fan. I'm going to be working on it this weekend. How much will I get done? Lol.
1. Plumbing. Coolant, trans cooler, A/C.
2. Wiring. Just the fan wiring left, and it'll be super easy. 4 wires to hook up.
3. Exhaust. Connect manifolds to existing exhaust pipes. Install O2 sensors.
4. Intake. Measure for a tube of some sort and order it along with a filter.
5. Interior. Reupholster seat and doorpanels, reinstall dash and stereo.

Yep, MAF failure just makes the PCM run in speed density mode and no O2s limits it to open loop. Runs fine. In fact, before the days of custom SD OS with HPT and EFILive people used to force fail the MAF and disable the CEL for that code in order to run boosted cars in SD mode. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

I support the Norm mustache and shades.
Also, the stance with the new front end parts is bang-on. |

Washed? What's that?
Nah, I just took the picture from the dark side to hide the 4 months of garage dust.
I put about 10 miles on it with open headers blasting away. It drives really well, the 4L80E is great. Nice, firm engagement into gears and TCC PWM apply is much nicer than the old ker-thunk TCC. Stock stall appears to be around 2k+ which makes sense on a big heavy 2500HD van with only a 4.8L. Once I build an exhaust and intake tract I'll be mechanically done. I also need to recover the seat and toss the grille back in.
Stance is for sure. Front suspension has much more travel and is very well controlled now as well.
Problems:
1. Oil pressure gauge is pegged anytime the engine runs. Not sure if the '91 'Burb cluster takes a different OPSU or if mine just died during the swap. I left the stock OPSU as well so I can at least watch oil pressure in HPTuners. 45-50psi cold start and 25psi at 500rpm hot idle.
2. Idle of 500 in Drive means the power steering doesn't work so hot. I think the old Saginaw box has more resistance than the new trucks' rack and pinion. I'll bump idle to 600-650 in gear and see if that helps. 500 is too low anyway. I logged RPM of 420-430 a couple times while stopped and turning the wheels. Just chugs along nice and smooth. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

1) The matching OPSU for that cluster should still be on the engine your Dad bought, yeah?
2) How big of a MAP sin would it be to install a post-MAF vacuum idle bleed for the steering ala an old Toyota? |

Bumping idle will fix the PS issue. Air bleed a la Toyota is a dirty dirty hackjob.

That's all the modern ECM-controlled PS pressure switches are doing. Open the IAC valve bypass across the throttle blades to make up for the drag of the pump on the engine. It's all done post-MAF regardless so the ECM doesn't care.
Toyota maintained a mechanical idle speed control system on an EFI engine for ten years with the 22RE. There is no IAC, it's all based off of bypass valves. |

Got the exhaust done today, so I took it on a nice drive. I have about 50 miles on it so far. Fixed an oil leak from the dipstick tube; that's been the only problem so far. It drives great.
