What a pain, you'd think there would be a tried and true solution for this problem, unless people just bolt the junk together without checking. You sure aren't reinventing the SBC performance parts wheel here.
Speaking of, you're spending all this time and effort on an old SBC; you better save the money and just throw in an LS. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

I also gotta wonder if edlebrock has changed their intakes since I bought mine. They list it using the gasket I need.. yet it doesn't fit the manifold I have. |

This lets a man know how attached he is to the first gen engines. You're looking at all this work for an old 327, but Tony's starter goes out and he's like f**k it, gen-3 swap! |

Weiand and cam coming.
There's alot allready invested in this combo. And none of it is worth anything cause of gen3 swaps. Besides the fact its the motor from my very first car and its been in my impala, my 68 chevelle, and my 70 truck before going into the 87. |

Sunk cost fallacy strikes again!

True. I got out of the Gen1 game at just the right time. Made almost $2k parting out my spun bearing 350. That's getting harder and harder to do nowadays. Had to sell my rebuilt tree-fiddy and trans out of the truck for only $700 total.

Now this I understand. Sentimental attachment has helped me justify the sinking of many funbucks into old Chevys. There's a lot worse hobbies to have. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

I sent a question in to holley about the intake. The tech actually quoted the specs off of summits website lol. So I won't be sure it will fit until it arrives.
Check this out. Quote: | Hello Brandon,
Thanks for contacting Holley Tech Support. From what I can see on Summit''s site, |

Removed the cam tonight. Forgot what a bitch that is on a bird. Everything in the way. Looks to me that it was time to change the cam anyway. While not flat, some of the lifters were just starting to get a worn indent and a few of the lobes look a bit less pointy then others.
Kinda takes me way back, putting a cam in this motor was the very first automotive mechanical job I ever did. It had many flat lobes at that time and the lifters had to be pried out. This is back in 1985.
Talked to Marv about welding additional material on top of the intake if it won't cover the ports. So I should be able to make something work. I found several magazine test articles that ran on the new intake on even bigger heads. So I have hope. |

That cam is almost identical to one I used to run. Noticeably bigger than the XE256 you had.
I ran a 224/234@.050 with .466/.487 on a 114LSA. Bottom end was soft-ish, but it made 298whp and more torque with 8:1 CR and smog-era truck heads.
What kind of stall in the 'bird? _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

It's either 22 or 2400. Don't remember exactly. Compression is 9.3:1 on this motor so shouldn't be quite as lazy. Desktop dyno puts it at 400hp and a little over 400tq. |

The weiand arrived today. Opened the box up at work and was very disappointed. Ports looked tiny.
So I get it home and first compare the new edelbrock gasket on the old performer intake.. then take a sharpie and trace the ports on the new weiand intake. Yes, the ports are much smaller then the edelbrock. BUT, there is more meat around the port. Enough that it looks like it should seal fine!
Looks like I get to do a bit of port matching first though. The outside upper corners only had 1/16th of an inch of material to clamp on the performer intake.

That looks about right, lol. I didn't take that much material out, but I spent a good amount of time working on the weiand manifold I have to get the ports to match the gaskets and heads. |

I still wonder how much better my 350 would've done had I bothered to gasket match anything. Would've been a cool before/after dyno to see if it makes much difference. I suspect not much, but I was always too impatient to put my car back together to do any of it. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

After a few hours of grinding, it's done. Amazingly there's only 1/8" difference in material between this intake and the performer. Yet it makes all the difference.

Oh and I think I know why professional porters don't like to show their work. It's not because they want to keep secrets, except for the fact it probably looks like crap but works! |

I agree, not much. It's one of those: if you do EVERY little thing like this you might get 10hp. So what's your time worth? LOL You think the factory would have gone to that extra extent if it made enough difference in economy or drivability. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

If it hadn't been a quarter inch off I wouldn't have bothered. |
