Hopefully this makes sense:
1.) Use a cutoff wheel or other device to cut the horizontal flanges off along the blue line. (The flat surface with the bolt holes) Cut with the blade horizontally, which will decrease the height by the width of the metal.
2.) Get a longer piece of angle iron, and fit it around the remaining original piece of angle iron. Effectively doubling up the vertical piece, and creating a longer mounting flange with no holes.
3.) Round your corners with a grinder so they are smooth and aesthetically pleasing.
4.) In about the center of the new angle, on the vertical surface drill one hole through the new angle and the cross member. Bolt it with something small say a 5/16" bolt, leave it loose.
(NOTE: Do everything for both sides of course.)
5.) Mark a cross hatching or bulls eye on the frame, so you can locate the holes when you cannot see them.
6.) Position the crossmember on the transmission and torque arm where you want it, and raise the transmission to mounting height.
7.) Mark the hole locations on the new pieces of angle.
8.) Drill over sized holes in those locations.
9.) Recheck alignment on the car, you should now be able to bolt everything together.
10.) If everything fits, while the unit is bolted up, firmly snug down the 5/16" through bolts. Drill one more hole on each vertical piece and run a second through bolt. Tighten securely.
11.) Bring crossmember to me to weld the new pieces of angle iron into place. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

OK Paul, first part is done. I cut off the horizontal pieces.
This first cut, which should have been the easier one caused me the most problems. The cut wouldn't go as straight as I would have liked, but I think with a new angle iron section laid over top, it should work pretty good.
This one should have been the more difficult cut with the torque arm mount causing some interference, but I kind of breezed through it and it came out relatively straight.
Next, find some angle iron 3/16" to 1/4" thick and 2" on the sides and about 12" long (these were 8"). It might have to wait until I'm on vacation for the holidays so I can find a metal shop open when I'm not at work, I didn't see what I was looking for at Lowe's, but I'll keep looking. |

Getting closer. I have new angle pieces loosely bolted on. Next step, when the driveway isn't soaked, is to put the assembly up on the car and locate where the bolt holes should be. Red marks here are transferred from tape I used before I cut the original angle pieces off, they might be close to the right spot.

Took advantage of the semi-dry day and completed fitting the pieces together on the car. now bolted together so Paul can weld it together.

Thanks, but you're seeing the good side. There are significant gaps between the ends of the tubes and the flat horizontal pieces. I don't think there should be much problem filling them in, even if some steel stock needs to be used... |

I got the hole in the floor lengthened and the transmission lifted with the jack to about where it will be. The handle sits just a tad back from stock, but doable, and the height is just right. Now I need to get creative to cover the hole, maybe sheet metal up front and a rubber sheet to go around the shifter tower...
Also on the agenda is to try and organize the mess of radio harness, speaker wires, Sirius harness, etc. before putting the console back in. |

Some more done today before I have Paul weld the crossmember back together. A piece of sheet metal to cover the front part of the floor opening and the left side of the shifter tower. Relocated the shifter boot and cut larger hole in it to go around the shifter tower.
Console back in place and handle temporarily installed. Sits just about right, maybe a bit far to the right but can be spaced left. Looks like it might rub the console cutout when in reverse.

Indeed. Remember the fenders on my maroon Z28?
Make sure to get some Loctite on all those shift handle bolts, Al. It is a common issue on the T56 even with the factory shifter and bolt setup.
My LT1 trans hit the console in second if you shifted hard enough, but not fourth, sixth, or reverse. |

Paul just finished welding the crossmember together, awesome job too!! I might have it powdercoated later, but a coat of paint will suffice for now. One more transmission mounting bolt to get in (upper one on passenger side), then torque them all down and I can get this crossmember installed.

Nice, my old lincoln mig is still chugging along too.. Most of my problems with it are from the wire getting rusty. Dad bought a tig but I havent tried it yet. |
