OK
this is a 90' L98 with 96' LT1 -T56.
i have tried 2 different starters with the same results.

when i hit the key-the starter attempts to ingauge with a loud thunk,
so i assume i needed to shim away from FW...i tried every combination of shims out to a total 1/8" thats a lot of shims-but still the same no start.

i tried a 1996 LT1 mini starter(GM) and a 1990 T5 starter..same issues
whats up here-
please help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mike

That's the sound of gear tooth abutment. Either caused by low voltage at starter solenoid or really tight gear backlash. Suggest you measure voltage at solenoid while starter is trying to engage. Get it done in a few seconds or the solenoid pull-in coil will burn.
