I've always had one of those cheap vinyl steering wheel covers on my formy wheel. You know the one with the spiral vinyl lace.. Anyway been on there so long that the stuff started to crumble. The lace has always tried to come loose too, so I wanted something different. I didn't want one of those slip on thingies. Got one of those on the jeep.. while it works its just plain cheezy.

So I ordered up a Superskin. Real leather, but you have to "sew" it on with a pair of large needles. Took my wheel off and after 4 hours of work got her done. I used the cross stitch method which is hardest to do but looks pretty good. Here's a few pics.

Sewing it on

Finished

Looks even better on the car

It does look good. Now it's time for some carpet!

That's actually not that old.. Last time it was painted it was all new interior. And until a couple months ago there were floor mats on it. Camera flash does something awful to it though.

Another thing not to do.. Do NOT use carpet fresh. Had a stench in the car last winter and I carpet freshed everything. Now I get white soda blooms coming through all the time.

Looking at the pic.. those white areas along the edge of where the mat would be.. those are the soda blooms I'm talking about.. been vacuum'd and shampooed several times since too.

Only a half joking suggestion, but have you tried a vinegar rinse on it? I assume most of those sprinkle-in/vacuum-out mixes are just a mix of bicarbonate and scent, and if so a mild acid would neutralize it.

Or eat a hole in the floor.. LOL No I haven't tried anything more aggressive then carpet shampoo.. Looks good for a few days then starts blooming again. Never thought it would act this way. A ton of water would probably work too.. just seems very wrong to do in a car.

The baking soda grows up out of the carpet like a flower. Think its basically forming crystals and growing.

Found an explanation. Probably has to do with moisture in the car from sitting so much.

Ha, and Aaron you aren't far off.. The product they recommend called Brown Out has citric acid in it. Sounds like it might be a cure for the carpet discoloration too. They explain thats caused by the carpet wicking. The carpet dries at the tips and pulls all the dirt, soda, shampoo etc up to the tips. Then when the moisture leaves the tips are dirty and your carpet is brown.

Good job on the steering wheel! Cool

That's just plain old bad luck about the carpet. LOL!
