So now that the Miata is gone, looking for a man's man vehicle.
I've got the wife sold on a soft top wrangler. I know many of you are jeep guys, thought i would seek some advice since these things come in all shapes, sizes, and prices.
All I know so far is 2.5=bad, 4.0=good. anything else i should be looking for in particular?

Honestly unless you're doing hard core wheeling or towing.... the 2.5 is actually pretty sweet with half doors and a soft top. Gets up and goes great and gets way better mileage.

Mileage may not be so different. Boss has a very low mile 2.5 tj. It's also terrible on gas. Been wheeling with a guy with one too and it does very well. However you run out of power on the highway. Being on an island.. it may be just fine for you.
35s with stock gears (3.73s or even worse 3.07 if not rubicon) might really suck. Drive it and see. Also some jeeps came with dana 35 rear and some with 44. Get a 44 if possible. |

The 2.5 I drove had street tires in the size of 31's and atleast 11.5 wide. It got 20mpg consistently and had no trouble around the hills on the highway.
Again, half doors and soft top drops a lot of weight.

Joel runs his topless.. half doors.. burns a tank of gas to portland and back on 32s. Sweet rig though.. only 40k on the clock. Very very gutless but its also an Auto.
The guy I've been wheeling with enjoys his. But he's put 4.88s in and is on 33s. |

That's the kicker. Like most small engines the 2.5 really needs a five-speed.
Really you are doomed either way. The 4.0L has the economy of a V8 but without the power, and the 2.5L has 6 cylinder economy with even less power. If you wanted power or economy you really shouldn't have bought a very tall cinder block to drive around!
That TJ being an auto kinda sucks, but the price is what you'd pay over here (or even a bit less, somehow  ). |

Jeep world's slightly different. The harder core actually remove their 5spds for autos. But then add all kinds of gizmo's to give almost manual control.. I think my friend Tim has to do more to shift his auto jeep then I do.
That's more of a response to the TJ Jake's looking at.. not that the 2.5 is an auto.. the 4banger auto is truly sad. |
