Power windows don't work.
Climate control fan no bueno.
Battery dies deader than some really dead stuff.
So the WDO breaker, or something else entirely?
Recent work done:
New steering column installed, high beam switch was swapped over. All lights work etc.
Front end work done, nothing related to windows or anything else electrical there. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |

Only one explanation: The Ghost is back.
Did you retain your existing ignition switch (the actual switch down on the column, not the cylinder) or did you use the "new" one? |

retained the switch.
Transferred the switch and the high beam over to new column.
Ghost might be back I guess. He lived in the power lock relay, still don't have that so if he's back he found a new residence. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |

Do the electric cooling fan(s) work? (Yes, I am going somewhere with these questions.) |

There is a 10ga orange wire coming out of the ignition switch and ending in the fuseblock feeding the power windows, fan relay and blower motor. I am betting heavily on that wire being the problem.
Here is a fun picture! The wire is the left of the two wires marked ORN. Ignore the one on the right. It's only for Canadians!

Yep. that was it. The harness that the suspect wire runs through was not plugged in.

You know how every time you read a troubleshooting flow chart you have to skip ahead past all the stupid "Is the device plugged in?" "Is the power switched on?" "Please ensure a functional VHS tape is inserted..."
This is why!
Now we just need to figure out what to do about The Ghost. |

yes the ghost.
Took the car to ye olde cotter pin store to buy cotter pins, 3 EA @ .33
Battery was deader than the aforementioned dead thing. Walk home get the other car, jump started, and had to push it the last half block home. Back to the jumper cables, start car and gauge reads approx 12 volts. Multimeter to the alternator with car running showed 12.2V Offending harness plugged in and all seems well again. 14.26 volts at alt.
Sooo is this about right, or did I exorcise the poltergeist by plugging the harness. I mean, is there a legit reason the alt. was not charging the way it should have been. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |

Yes there is.
Along with triggering the cooling fan relay, the fuse marked 'FAN' also feeds the ignition triggered side of the alternator. Without that rail of the fusebox hooked up your alternator never switched on and your battery died.
Any time you're feeling down about your grasp on electrical theory and/or design, just remember that GM designed a car where the fuse that said 'FAN' could burn out and cause the battery to die.
Yup.
They did that.
And then all the engineer's paychecks cleared.
Yup. |

When I lived in Gig Harbor I drove the trans am to a friends bar in West Seattle. Of course the top was down. Sometime during the evening, someone stole the FAN fuse from my car. Just that one. I didn't realize until halfway home when the lights started getting dimmer and dimmer. Man that one took me a while to figure out. Thank god for good quality batteries. _________________
