What are the actual number of HC and CO? That would help determine if it is a problem with the car, or too strict a test.

I'm assuming the latest failure was with the car running on a heavy mix of iso?

Too much iso is bad and you go backward. Race grade methanol from a speed shop is the best fuel. It's made to run in engines. Don't buy crap from home depot.

Yes Tony. Technically thays what that pipe is for, but from factory only runs cold. Any bigger than a 5/16 hole and it sounds like an exhaust leak they might go digging for.

If you basically give it an exhaust leak, doesnt that decrease CO2? and isnt there a minimum that you need in order to pass?

If I am not running an AIR injection pump should I cut this same hole to aid in exhaust catalysis?

So, both the shop and I are confused. It passes way below at the shop, but by the time I take it to DEQ, it fails again.

Was floating around 3000 for hydrocarbons before I took it in, latest was 322 at Idle, max is 220. CO and CO2 were also pretty high, 9.4 for CO2 at idle, and 2.89 for CO. The shop said the cat was cooling off really fast so to keep the idle up when waiting in line, which I did, but it still ends up failing. The shop said the hydrocarbons was less than 100 before I picked it up.

Haven't tried any alcohol yet, threw in a bottle of octane booster, but that didn't really change anything.

Air before the cat helps the cat function better. It get's it hotter which helps the chemical reaction That's why the air injection pump functions when the car is cold, to get the cat operating faster.

When you're driving out to the location, how far away is it? Pesky vehicles I'll take on a good 25mile hill based road trip and flog it to get everything as heat soaked as possible.

Which engine are we dealing with?

If I could get my 330hp/350tq v8 to pass, anyone can.

You're only failing at idle. It's not hot enough, idle is too low, and or timing too advanced (for the test, not for runability.)

Really sounds like the Cat itself isn't doing it's job. Common. Hense they said it's cooling down. Not enough reaction to keep it hot enough to clean. Get it darn hot. Don't care about looks in the lanes, rev the bugger to 2500 while waiting. HOT.

Yeah, retard the timing and get the engine hot. Like some guys mentioned in the first two posts, and yet this thread has gone on for almost a month. Laughing

Those are basically the same test limits we have in Washington for any pre-OBD2 car. It's not like Oregon is picking on old cars. Honestly I haven't even had to run iso in anything lately, just freeway stomp and get an easy pass.

Emissions tests don't keep polluting cars off the road, but they do keep lousy mechanics in business. Laughing

Is the Oregon test still crazy driving on the rollers? If so Aaron, that test is whacked. When Dewey and I tried to get Layla to pass... it was idle, accel to 25mph and coast down and repeat like 5 times.. And we couldn't drive it. Not steady state like WA. Same numbers, more strenuous test.

It's a carbed 2.8L V6. It's about 5 miles or so to the test station, and I keep it in like 2nd gear the whole way pretty much so around 3000 rpms the whole way there, and I keep it around 2000 in line. No rollers, just a sniffer test.

Not nearly hot enough. Bump the idle up to 950.

Yeah, testing it repeatedly and on overrun is pretty nuts, but it sounds like Oregon has followed Washington and given up on the rollers.

Washington is actually giving up testing entirely in 2017. No one fails anymore because these tests are so simple to beat. Laughing

You Oregonians and your so-called "hippies" can't even legally buy weed, so I'm not buying in to any of that. Razz

Tried again, drove it hard for like a half hour, kept it nice and hot in line, and it did even worse, with like double the hydrocarbons and way to high CO and CO2..
