Not just that but the basic understanding of how the device functions and how things work and how they can be made to work.

If a joint leaks don't take it back to the store and then write a bad review on the internet. It weighs 300 pounds! Just put some pipe dope on the fitting and save your time and your back. Rolling Eyes

I bought a cheap 1/4" cordless ratchet once and the reviewers were complaining about lack of power.. They were trying to use it to remove intake and head bolts.. LOL It's a freaking 1/4" ratchet.. it does what its intended for.

I stumbled upon a perfect compressor for my needs. It was at Costco.

Snap on brand, 15 gallon, 3.3CFM@90PSI 125PSI max. oil bath type. It's not a cast iron compressor housing, it's aluminum. It came with oil, hose, and fittings.

The best part is since it's form Costco, If I am dissatisfied I can take it back and go buy the husky from home depot.

Update!
I have everything (that I can find/get to) disconnected for the engine/tranny removal except the drive-line and torque arm. and the hood is sitting on the roof.

I have purchased my new pan, seals, timing chain/gears, timing cover, water pump, and distributor o-ring.

I still need to purchase new header gaskets (i have the metallic crushable ones on order from the local Baxter's, no more flat copper), I still need the bolt on pickup retainer, a set of spark plugs (while I am in there) and exhaust flange gaskets. I am also going to get some shiny heat resistant wire wrap for the wires that go under the exhaust pipes.

Questions:
Can anyone tell me what size the stock pickup tube for the oil pump is? The bolt on retainers come in two sizes.
with the accessories removed I can get bolts into the heads to attach the hoist to the front of the engine, where do you put the ones on the back?
Do you need to get the engine a little ways out before you can get bolts in there?

Thank you everyone for the advice and assistance.

Think about the symmetry of the heads. Wink

Pulled the pan, My oil pan has a tray in it that sits up above the bottom of the pan (the new pan has one, but it's much smaller). It looks like that got bent up, and was causing the noise.

I also found that my oil cooler was leaking BAD. from between it and the block. I remember hearing a while back that it was OK to just delete these. Can anyone tell me about there experience doing that? After much research I have found that I just need to replace the factory bolts (with studs sticking off) with regular hex headed bolts and I can ditch the oil cooler altogether.

I pulled the timing cover today as well and found my chain much looser than I would have liked. The new chain and gears have already been purchased.

Got the new chain on. Finally got my new bolt on oil pump pickup retainer today. I installed it, and the new screen, and prepped the gasket surface, and that is when I decided I wanted to paint the timing chain cover. Painted the Headers at the same time, they were looking beat up. the other day I stopped at my brothers house and he welded up the holes left by the air injection tubes I cut off. That should clean up the engine bay a little.

Not until after he finishes building the new shop, repaints it, does a 4th gen interior swap, stereo upgrade, transmission rebuild with shift kit, and brake upgrades. You know, just the standard stuff for an oil pan repair.

tonight I'll get the timing cover and pan on, and then i'll be able to flip the thing on the stand to R&R the rear main seal. At that point I should be good to reattach the clutch and transmission.

Then on Saturday I will push the roller back in the garage to do a few underhood things while the engine is out, which will hopefully culminate in putting the engine back in.

I still need to pickup a new belt, new spark plugs, and some new hoses.

If all goes well the car could potentially run and drive on Saturday, albeit with open headers.

My big question right now is my collector-to-ypipe seals. I can't find the right ones and SLPs website is not much help. anyone with SLP shorties know where to source the gaskets?

From the pics they look like ball-and-socket... Confused

If so that would explain why you can't source a gasket.

Yep, shouldn't be any gaskets for those, just tighten 'em up.

Are those Mike's old ones? If so, they don't use gaskets. Clean the soot on both sides and snug them up.

Remember that when you put your timing chain on, both marks face inward toward each other. Then you need to spin the engine ONE revolution back to TDC before you install the distributor, if not you'll be 180 out and it wont run, just make fires.

Yes they are Mike's old ones. Thanks for the confirmation, no wonder they always leaked. I had thrown some flange gaskets in there before, that fit pretty well considering they were not supposed to be there.

I did not pull the distributor. I was able to leave it in without damaging it.

I got the engine in today, pulled a CLASSIC Tony though; rented a harmonic balancer installation tool from the Auto Zone, broke it by over tightening. I was able to source another bolt for it locally, I will find out tomorrow if the Autozone is cool with the replacement or if I just bought myself a puller.

I have also lost a transmission mount bolt, which held me up from going much further, but the engine is in, and the engine mounts are bolted.
