Right now my little plug in Weller is fine for anything 16ga and below. For the real large stuff I use a torch. I need a happy medium in the 14ga to 8ga range so I'm not sitting here all day with this small iron.
I know there are plenty of electronic guys on here, so I'm hoping I can get some crew recommendations. |

I use a Weller for electronics, but at work I have a snappy butane iron/torch. I like it pretty well and you can probably find cheaper versions out there. |

FWIW, I use the same solder rework station at work for everything. It's just a matter of choosing the right tip for the iron for the job at hand. Some jobs require extra heat from a heat gun just to get solder to flow (internal ground planes suck heat from your work). With the larger tip, the iron doesn't get any hotter, it just has more surface area to transfer heat to your work.
What's in your budget? I did a search and found something very similar to what I use for $80, even has a hot air gun. Soldering iron has interchangeable tips. Should do everything up to 8 AWG.

Haha... the price jump on these good irons is a bit steep. I haven't thought much about what I want to spend. I don't think I've ever payed more than fifteen bucks for an iron, which may explain some of my problems.
In the past I have used a Weller analog station at work. It was pretty sweet, but I never tried to do anything high gauge since we were doing all high voltage/low amperage stuff. |
