Tony, that reminds me of something, what's the difference between the T-5's used on 3rd-gen V6's, and the 5-speed's used on 4th-gen V6's? Weren't the later ones T5's too? |

I'll handle this one:
Aaron:
3.4L 4th gen's use the same transmission all 3rd gen's with 60 degree V6's have. 14 spline input, same gear ratios, etc.
3.8L 4th gens use a WC-T5 that the late model 3rd gen V8 cars used. same 1 1/8" input shaft, 26 spline, but uses a smaller flywheel and a 9 3/8" clutch disc. The 3.8L 4th gens have a hydraulic TOB, and use a "pull off" style clutch like LT1 cars use. _________________

Okay, thanks Tony. I was wondering that while messing around at the boneyard the other day, since I noticed the fourth-gen V6's looked like T5's. |

uhh.. your welcome.
but thanks for bringing that up Aaron, that just goes to show you how plentiful a transmission for a 2.8 is. you can use any trannsmission from a v6 fody from 1983-1994. (in 82 the 2.8s had a 4 speed if i am correct.) |

The LS1 Cars have a Hydraulic Throw Out
The LT1 Cars have the Throw Out as integrated into the clutch pressure plate. |

According to TGO that's right. I know the 305's used a BW T-10 of some sort. Don't know what the Dukes and the 2.8's got.
*EDIT* Woops, looks like further investigation reveals that only a handful got the Borg Warner Super T-10. More common place to find a Saginaw 4 speed in the 82 cars. _________________

How hard is at T-5 swap exactly? I would LOVE a manual in this car! Only prob is I dont have the tools, knowledge or space to do that right now so how much would it cost for a shop to do it? I would gladly pay and assist anyone who would like to help instead.
I might as well keep my eye out for a V8 Fbody. My 2.8 has enough scoot to smoke your average honda ricer and just earlier tonight a black Jetta but still.... I want something that actually accelerates past 40mph. Any Klamath Falls residents got any leads on a nice V8 Fbody?
And Xophertony,Thanks for tell me about this place man cause I appreciate that. This place is pretty sweet! _________________ 89 Firebird 2.8 (white)

Hey QwkTrip, what on gods green earth is that engine in your garage pics!!?! Man I want one... Sign me up plz! lol.
And I will surely take care of this car,it gets way to good a' gas milage to beat up on it. I've pushed this car as hard as it can go maybe three or four times in the year & 1/2 I've owned it. I try to baby it honestly, crappy thing is some old dude's pickup rolled across the parking lot and smacked my Fbody in the left rear bumper . Hit lightly enough to cause the bumper to crunch the quarter panel in a bout 1/2 an inch and caused some paint to flake off but really nothing major... I think it hurt me more than it hurt the car... Kinda sucks cause other wise the body was perfect..... Freak'in body shops making $45+ an hour adding up to way more than 1K for a TINY crunch which is retarded in my opinion but thats life I guess. Makes me sick ... Owell,no mechanical damage which is nice but still.....
Thinking about keepin both my birdies and seeking out a 4th gen Fbody w/ V8.... I dont want, I need something faster!
Take care all . _________________ 89 Firebird 2.8 (white)

Keep the V6 Car as daily, reliable Transportation, and play with the V8.
I went the other way and had a 4th gen V6 for Daily and reliability, and had a 3rd gen V8 for fun. _________________

You guys are pretty dang cool I gotta say!
Just outta curiousity, how hard is an engine and tranny rebuild to do? I want to learn the serious technical stuff about cars so badly I wish KF had a school I could go to,to learn ya know? I know my bro-inlaw would help out a ton cause he knows a little more about cars than I do but thats still not a whole heck of a lot ya know? I cant afford to pay a shop and I dont think they would do a good enough job to my specifications (except les swab, those dudes rock!) so I wanna do it myself.
Here in about a month or so I'll be moving in to a nice place with garage so I'll be able to tear it all down. A buddy of mine has a motor stand(that you can pull motors out with) and a tranny jack that I could borrow. But still, would this be a pretty straight forward operation? I'm good with details and a total perfectionist!.
Still lookin for a V8.... On a side note, why do people think a beat up,and beat down,"84 Corvette with 230,000+ milage is worth 5K plus? are they just stupid scammers or what? LOLOLOLOL.
Thanks agian guys! _________________ 89 Firebird 2.8 (white)

Steven, we need to get together and I can give you an idea about what it takes to do a 5 spd swap. I've done two of them now.
I even have a 5 spd from a V6 Firebird just sitting on the floor in my shop. |

Hey uh... rjmcgee could I give you a call either tomorrow or maybe wednesday? Maybe we could meet up and talk cars and what not. Either coffee or beer which every you prefer (I'll buy the 1st round lol).
Sounds like you know worlds more than I and I love knowledge. And if OIT has an automotive section I would give anything to get in to it! Been wanting to go back to school (spent a couple years for an assosiates in programming but dont wanna do it for a living ya know, hammering out codes isnt as fun as it sounds, for me anyways).
Anyone tried Forza Motorsports 2 yet? the 360 is one sweet machine. Buy it and F2! lol.
Thanks. _________________ 89 Firebird 2.8 (white)
