PostPosted: Sun Dec 26, 2010 11:03 am    Post subject: Motor mount/hood question Reply with quote

My engine sits like this. It will not fit under a stock hood. My hood has the support beam cut out and my HSR is slightly clearanced and I still require my latch to be adjusted so that the hood has to stick up about half an inch to successfully close.

The motor mount part that bolts to the engine is from a Suburban, the clamshell rubber part is a stock Camaro piece.

My question is:

Will changing to an all-Camaro engine mount solution make my engine drop a little bit lower so I can fit this whole shebang under a stock hood?

If not, I wonder if my steel '84 Z hood is the problem, would switching to another style of stock hood fix my problem? I had read on TGO and heard from folks here that the HSR fits under a Camaro hood with no problem. For those who don't know what the steel Z hood looks like, here's a picture:

The motor brackets are different between trucks and camaros.

I am 99% sure that is your problem.

Great, my future plans include having body lines that actually match up, so if I can fix my hood alignment problem by getting different motor brackets, that makes my life a whole lot easier.

Even when I was carbed I had to run a drop-base housing with a 2" filter element, and the hood kissed the top of the nut when it was fully closed.

Hmm, so it looks like I got lucky that the 'Burban ones worked at all.

I'll try to get my hands on some Camaro ones eventually, I like hood clearance. Smile

My hsr looks just like that. The only clearance issue is the hose clamp for the bellows, if the worm gear is up, it dimples the squarish piece of the hood support. Otherwise no problems with the factory stuff.

I think my hood is part of the problem too then. Unless you also have truck motor mounts Paul. Razz

Mine hits on the fins on top of the HSR. Everyone always asks me if my hood is latched all the way. The center part of my hood where the scoops come down is at least an inch lower than it would be if I had a flat or IROC hood.

Bad pictures cause I'm at work during all the daylight hours, but here's what I mean. You can even see where I tried to clearance the HSR a little bit, but it didn't help enough:

I'm sitting here thinking, Wow you used a red vacuum cap in the same exact location I did. Laughing

I fit that very intake under MY hood! Very Happy Although I had factory clam shells and poly mounts, I rubbed on the accordion piece

Time to ditch the truck stuf duder. You'll have better driveline angles too then!

I'm just worried that when I ditch the truck mounts (which may or may not be incorrect) it won't solve my problem and I'll have to get a different hood anyway. I guess I'll be the man with the HSR/hood/motor mount fitment knowledge after this is all over. Very Happy

Here's an idea, I'll measure my motor brackets and compare them to my bro's Trans Am this weekend to find out definitively whether or not the mounting height is different. If it is, I'll be switching mounts. If it's not, then the mystery continues. If it's not mounts, it has to be my hood. I'm not doing all the work to swap my brackets out if they're the exact same as my brother's T/A. Work smarter, not harder. Razz

From your pictures Paul, I'm inclined to believe my mounts are just fine. My HSR does not seem to stick up any higher than yours. The biggest difference in our respective setups is that the hood on your car does not come downwards as much as mine in the center.

Indents are the same roughly IROC hood to Z28 indents.

Ian's fit. Firechicken hoods slope down way faster and way quicker than any Camaros.

This means yours is sitting up too high for some reason.

Yeah. It isn't just a similar intake. I used the SAME intake and it fit fine under my 'bird hood. Which is smaller than your big camaro hood. Smile

FWIW I think all the steel hoods have basically the same bottom skin. I have a flat RS hood leaning up against the wall in my shop, and it has the indentation in the bottom for the IROC louvers. So I don't think a flat hood will buy you anything.

Yup yup Aaron speaks the truth. If its not clearing, you'll have to cut off some of the ribbing, or figure out your motor mount situation.

Already cut all the ribbing out of the way. I wish it was that easy. #$%^&*

OK, here's the difference. Mine measure around 3 inches from bolt hole to mounting surface. If anyone gets a chance, can you tell me what the approximate measurement is of the stock style mount? I'm gonna measure some at a junkyard or on my bro's car as soon as I get a chance. They don't look all that different to me. Maybe an inch of difference if that? Which translates to around a half inch of engine drop. That won't be enough... Sad

These are the big ones...

These are what I need...

but remember that you measurement is determined at the midpoint of the motor, not at the front where your hitting, it will be a bigger difference there

Hmm. Make sure you post specific measurements, I'm always looking for more ground clearance and this may be an easy solution to tuck my exhaust up higher than the subframe.
