Anybody weld their spider gears here?

What are the drawbacks?

My red car needs more traction.

Wears out tires and bearings. Crazy scary in the rain.

Sometimes it straight grenades the rest of the spiders and takes out the whole diff.

Twisted Evil happy hunting!

I have a 10 bolt I tossed a few pounds of weld in. Still haven't installed it yet to see how it behaves.

no hunting Rolling Eyes

My only concern is twisting an axle with this being a drum brake rear.

I actually have two goals here. One is I am going to drive this car this winter and we are off to a very snowy start. It is great going down the road, but is absolutely helpless getting started. Since I sometimes leave it at work for several days and often show up in the middle of the night, I don't want the damn thing stuck. And it won't back out of the driveway.

Second if the street manners are acceptable I might do this on the blue car. Would still weld up an open carrier before putting a mini spool in it.

Was just curious if anyone had any first hand experiance with this.

a guy in high-school tried it, ruined his rear inside of a week. he was kind of a screw up in general though, and i'm sure he would not do as good a job of welding something solid as you Rodney.

so how are things down south, we have not seen you on the boards in a while. must be busy eh?

If you weld it solid, breaking is not an issue.

However, every corner you take that inside tire will howl. Every time. Thats why you are going to burn through tires, its like draging that tire.

Also in the rain/snow its going to be scary. The inside tire cant freewheel, it has no give and the rear end is going to come around on you stupid fast. I wouldnt weld it if your going to use it in bad weather.
It will help you get out, but every corner you take you are forcing that inside tire to break traction which can force the outside tire to break loose.
In the long run it will cause you way more headaches then its worth.

Actually honestly, A set of GOOD tires, a shovel and a Bag of sand will be WAY better for you then welding that thing up.

Man, just get out the welder and do it up like this real quick. Might need a better clutch, but hey, that's what modification is all about. Wink

Not sure what I'm looking at. Is the pinion gear welded to the ring gear? Shrug

There's a thread on here somewhere about that picture. It's a funny read if you can find it.

true posi > welding spider gears.

There's a guy on my friend's Volvo forum (OVT, IIRC) who did the same with his open diff, blew his carrier apart and ruined one of his axles.

Moral: Welded spider gears are bad for street use.

When I got home Tuesday I openned it up and got to work. Was a pain to weld it under there but got it done, roads were still decent so went for a test. Not noticable except when making tight turns. When I got to the truck yard Thursday night we had a bunch of new snow and I was able to motor right out and home with it. Does great on ice and snow now.

This will be temp in this car, I picked up an 88 IROC this summer that has a disc brake rear under it. I think all disc rears were posi, so if the ratio is right it will go under this car this spring when I can get to the parts car.

If welded decent I don't see any problems with the carrier. You don't really weld the spider gears together, you weld the spiders to the carrier. I think I'll do this to the blue car though.

Half the CC has a Jeep of some type. You should come over to the dark side. Cherokee's are getting dirt cheap and many still run well.

You thunk incorrectly, sir. My '85 Z28 has an open disk brake 10-bolt under it.

Because he's probably a gentleman and leaves the truck at home for Jenn and the little one so they can go wherever they need.
