The Camaro. Finally. So....I was wondering if you guys could recommend a supply store. I know of Eastwood, but they aren't very affordable. At all. I'm looking for paint packages mostly (Primer, Base Coat, Clear Coat). At this point I'm planning on going with a stock GM color. I can get all the sanding blocks, etc. at Summit I was thinking, but I want quality paint. Let me know! Thanks guys..

I am also in the "process" of repainting my GTA. everything is removed, all glass is gone, interior is gone....hood and fenders are stripped-working on doors and body.. then the hard work starts...primeing and sanding and sanding and sanding and well etc. etc.....
then base coat and sanding and sanding................
then clear and sand.......................

i have not bought primer or paint yet, but i think i will start with a DP-40 type epoxy primer then several coats of a cheaper heavy build primer.
ebay has some good deals on paint packages, base clear reducer etc..

. I didn't think about Ebay...but I need to know good brands and stuff. Plus I'm looking for a specific color so a store would be easier. I'm gonna need a high build primer most likely, so I can get it as smooth as possible. Once I get the paint and supplies I'll pull it into the shop, disassemble the exterior and interior then mask it all. But I want to drive it until then so right now I'm collecting. Just need to know what to collect/where to collect from. Very Happy

I use mostly PPG paint, the good stuff. Its expensive, but I like it. They have a lower grade... um, forget the name. Used it for the first time on my dads truck and when mixing the paint/thinner, it didnt seem to disolve/mix very well.

I have used dupont color once. No complaints. I am still using a gallon of dupont clear. It smells really good Very Happy

When using filler primer, MAKE SURE you sand between layers, its the only way it works. If you just spray several layers and dont sand, your just waisting product and building thickness that will crack/chip. Idiot people like my dad just thinks it fills on its own.

I was looking at both Dupont and PPG, I've heard they are quality products. I'm spraying it myself to keep costs down, and I don't want to skimp on paint. Know where I could look at colors and actually buy the paint?

I dont live in your area, so I dont know what stores carry what.

PPG is actually "pittsburg paints" so take a look and see if they have a locator online.

both will have a factory color for you.

Ok cool I'll look into it. I was gonna go with Luxo Blue that the 06 Vettes had on them. Anyone seen it in person? I've only seen pictures but it looks real purdy. So if someone has seen it, could you tell me if its really that sexy?

Ive likely seen it, we have several blue vettes in my area. If its the bright blue metallic, it looks goooooodddddd!

Yeah it looks fairly bright. This is the only picture I have of it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/camaro85/4794380792/. Looks like whoever painted it didn't paint the nose while it was on the car since its a different shade than the fender. Maybe its just because of the curve of the fender? I heard with metallics you have to paint the panels on the car, or the way they will hang on the car otherwise the flakes won't line up the same?

Definatly have to be painted as they hang on the car.. and better yet all together. I screwed that one up once.. painted my cab and doors at the same time.. out of the same gun.. but doors were laying flat.. doors came out darker.

I used transpar paint at Napa and some select Oreilly's. My paint is almost 6 years old and it still shines up great!

Tip for spraying metallics.
spray each panel back and forth like you would normally to ensure complete coverage, but at the very end take a step back and spray a quick back and forth to mist the whole panel. This will lay down a mist of the metallic over the whole panel so you don't end up with stripes in the metallic.

Sorry that reads so confusing, just ask me if you have any questions. But its meant to help create a complete even layer of metallic flakes.

I have seen cars painted with plastic parts, on car, at same time, same gun. The plastic panels turned out a different shade then the metal.

Metallics. Shake the gun OFTEN, like between every stripe of paint. Some of the old school guns they would put marbles in the bottom, some had built in stirs.

They may have eletric lids for the new guns, I havent looked.

Jake's stripes are painted. IIRC, he painted the stripes first, then masked them off to paint the rest of the car.

Thats what I was gonna do, but I'm not sure that I could get the tape straight enough...and the paint won't bleed past the edge of the tape?

In that situation, Id paint the rest of the car, then the stripes. Thats how I painted mine. But w/e

They have pinstripping tape for that stuff, comes in different widths. I have the 1/16?? stuff for the flames in mine. Since you will be doing long strait shots, you could get the 1/4 easy.

Well i started ordering the paint today. Went to Napa and looked at some samples and chose a nice blue and gold. Should go good together. We shall see i suppose. I'm getting the primer in tomorrow then next week I should be able to get the base coats. Then the week after that I'll find some clear. I was planning on putting on lots of layers of clear. What's the most layers i should put on? I don't want to jack anything up. When spraying the base coats, should i sand after every coat? Or spray all my coats, then sand the final? The paint is metallic...Thanks for your help guys!

I wouldnt sand the base coats at all. And you only have 24hrs after applying the base to apply the clear. You really only need about 2 good coats of clear.
