Non 3rd gen rear end into a 3rd gen? What's it take?

Well, I'm looking at getting the 87z to PIR, but I know I'd blow the 2.73 to pieces with slicks.

So... since the 69 is retired from racing, I'm thinking, if it's possible, about swapping the 69 rear end into the 87z.

I understand the difference between the leaf spring set up on the 69 and the system on the 87. What I don't know is if there's brackets or something that could be welded onto the 12 bolt housing on my 69 that would get it to bolt into the 87.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Gonna need to fabricate a torque arm mount but it shouldn't be to hard. The width is where it might get ya and I am not sure the difference there.

Why the retirement for the 69?

Well... I want to go quite a bit faster... I'm looking at some point to get to 150 or so.

The faster you go, the more "stuff" you have to do to the car... roll cage, back half (which pretty much takes out the back seat) and so forth. W/2 kids, I need the back seat.

We've put a lot of money into this car, and my wife is concerned about "butchering" it and/or "bending" it (I "bent" it once before: it was a $12,000 dent.)

If I "bend" the 87, I can go out and get another one for not a lot of money and be back up and running in no time.

If I "bend" the 69, I'll never hear the end of it... and it would cost major cash to fix.

Also, I'm interested in making the 69 more streetable and into more of a cruiser.... a lower geared rear end and a drive train swap from the 87 to the 69 and back looks promising in that regard. This 5 mile a gallon thing just sucks.

If I can figure out a realistic way to use the 12 bolt in the 69 instead of going out of pocket for one that will bolt into the 87, then that seems to be a good way to go. I've got a low=geared 10 bolt already, though I understand I'll need to go to the single leaf spring set up instead of the 4 or 5 leaf its got now because of the perches.

But I figure replacing the 454 with a 383 and the 700R4 with the 2.73's or whatever in the 10 bolt will make it a much more "cruisable" car that will get driven a lot more.

Always open to suggestions, tho.

Leave the '69 In tact.

This is starting to sound kinda back yardish for what I've seen you put into your cars.

There's a good chance the widths wont be right either.

Moser/Currie etc make complete rear's for our cars.

I built my own 9" for mine. ALOT of work and it came close to what buying one would have cost.

Can't seem to find my post on the rear but here is the Torque Arm Post.

I can understand about the safety gear im ok till 9.9X but I am already looking at getting the add on for the cage and doing some extra stuff to cert to 8.50.

What powerplant are you planning on running to get you to 150?

Well, in the best of all worlds, I'll be swapping the 454 into the 87Z at some point. It may become something else after awhile, but a rebuild for NOS is on the horizon.

The 383 has had some pretty substantial head work done, but I need a cam and a carb set up to go with it. In the short term, that's why the swap seems attractive.

Have you still got the pics for this? Some of them don't seem to come up.

But the width question is a tough one. I'm now leaning in this direction. Now I have a better idea what to research. Thanx, TT.

I put a moser 9 under my car and never looked back haha (except for twisting the splines on the nice moser axles)

What heads are on the 383?

I twisted the splines on my Moser axles also. They told me to run it....

They're the vortec heads that were on a 350... but they've had substantial porting, polishing, 3 angle cut and so forth.

Jim at Lou's Machine did them. And while it woke up the stroker, I know it needs something besides the stock 350 cam that's in it now.

Moser 9 inch, eh?

I had Jim do some work for me. After getting into the field I found them to actually be just so so. My 3 angle valve job was actually a single angle valve job. :O( And in one of my motors they left the galley plugs out and sealed up the timing cover/pan.
