The axles will come right out, once you remove the c-clips.

I would freshen up the axle bearings and seals while you are in there, its a good time to do it.

Since you are doing gears, will need a crush sleeve. I would get one of the solid types. Beyond that, you need all the seals/bearings that you will be doing. for both the axle and pinion.

also remeber, you will need a dial-indicator to check backlash, and make sure you do the wear pattern checks.

If you need a slide hammer, I have a 5 lb. kit with a bunch of attachments.

Did you get a set of 3 series gears to install?
Your 3.08's are not going to fly since their from a 2 series carrier.

You will need a dial indicator that has a magnetic base so that you can attach it to the outside of the case and position the dial indicator on the ring gear and then rock the ring gear back and forth measuring the amount of back lash (back and forth movement of the ring gear before it moves the pinion)

Also when they are talking about checking the wear pattern you will want some paint and a small brush. You paint a couple of the ring gear teeth both front and back and turn the pinion to rotate the painted area around once. You then inspect the area and this will tell you is the gears are riding on the high side, low side, or in the middle. There is a coast side and a drive side of the ring gear and you need to pay attention to which side has what marks.

Rearend work can be a finicky job. Anyone can throw one together but it takes the right adjustments to make one last without howling and whining or having excessive backlash clunk

You will also need a rolling torque wrench so that you can set the pinion bearing preload. It will depend on what bearing you are using (used or new) to know how much to set the preload at.

If you need help once you run a pattern on the gears just post a picture Im sure myself or one of the other guys can tell you by the look of the mesh how your gears are meeting one another.

I set up my customers gear depending on how they are planning on driving and what the primary use of the car is going to be.

Hope this helps a bit!

If you want to use that 2 series Posi carrier, but retain the gear ratio that you have now, you can always get a ring gear spacer and run the 3 series ring/pinion gear on a 2 series carrier.

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/7-1-2-Inch-GM-Ring-Gear-Spacer-with-Bolts,7534.html

This will save you from having to remove the pinion gear from the axle on your car now. You may have to change the axles themselves though if your 2 series posi carrier is a 26 spline.

The motor swap will take more than the weekend. If I were you, I'd concentrate on one thing at a time! Wink

I'm with stupid

The fastest I've ever done an engine swap working by myself that wasn't a direct in-out swap was three days. Get it running with the pegleg first.

I'm with stupid for sure.

I'd focus on one at a time. I also may be able to come help a little bit over the weekend. I'll have to confirm my schedule with some people first. Wink
