Ok so I have been working on another project. Building another drag car one that pops can run so we both have a car to run at the strip although he wants me to drive it for the quicker runs lol....... Although this new vehicle wears Chevrolet badges it does not have the Camaro nameplate.... Although it does start with a C...... CORVETTE lol
So we picked up a dirt dirt cheap 76 Corvette that was in ROUGH shape......
4 linking the rear, 14 point cage, and some steamrollers in the rear for starters. We are in the collecting parts stage right now but I already have gotten a good start and I am rolling the car into the garage to get started now.
But onto the fun part...... the new powerplant came from a 25 foot offshore racing boat which in it's current form had alot of HP as you will see by the parts.
The block is a late 68 to early 70's 427 tall deck block
Current bore is 4.280
Callies 4340 crank 4.250 stroke
Carillo H beam 6.535 rods with older speedpro 12.5 comp. Forged jugs hung from them.
Current Displacement 489 Ci
looking to go right around 500 Ci
Had a HUGE solid roller cam with an older afr Hydra Rev kit didn't grab any pics of that but im sure you motor guys will know what im talking about.
All this was topped by a set of 1971 LS-6 454 6272990 rectangle port heads with extensive work done to them.
So this build process has begun but this is going a different route then the norm.
First the pistons are getting ditched for a set of JE's or something comparable. Looks to drop it into the 8:5 range (great for the boost addition
Going to reuse the Crank and Rods as these items with withstand the HP goal. Going to ditch the heads for a set of AFR's but I think I will keep the heads and put them on a warmed 454 for the 67 Camaro later since these older iron heads have awesome power potential.
The best part is yet to come our plan is to run a procharger I am not sure what head unit yet though. Still shopping around.
I will try to keep everyone updated on this as well as get some pics up showing the ol' vette this is going into. Just stripped out primered flat black vette haha
Looking to cert the car to 8.50 maybe 7.50 is I get crazy with the cage.
Looking to build another stronger 383 soon for Z as well though! _________________

Good scrounging. That motor should be a beast! The oval port heads I have look big, but the rectangle ports are ginormous. Can't wait to get some better bottom end parts for mine but it might be a while.
How are those corvette stingrays to repair and drive? Never been in one. I assume they are heavy and not too rigid being primarily fiberglass. _________________ E30

Well there is good and bad about the corvette..... I myself am not really a Corvette man but my dad likes them. Good part is it is super light! I can push it around by myself fairly easy. not sure about how the 4 link will come out but I plan on just gutting the interior and rear of the car and cutting out the whole rear section then installing the 4-link and replacing the rear with aluminum sheeting and tubs. Nothing fancy just a workhorse. Nice part about the body is that since it is only fiberglass you dont have rust anywhere. We will see.
Should be getting the block sent off very soon and getting the new pistons here and getting the rotating all balanced out. _________________

| How do you go about mounting a steel frame to a fiberglass chassis? Let alone a frame. Good to hear they are light though! Everything under the chassis looks good? I know polyester resin is hydroscopic and anything sandblasted with road grime would be susceptable to rotting out. |

Well all the older corvette have a steel frame underneath just like any other car. The rear of the frame of the car is fairly rough but solid. Although the rear is getting removed anyways so it's all good. _________________

Well right on then. What do you think the entire thing will weight all said and done? It's gonna be a beast. I've seen a couple stingrays with HUGE cowl hoods. Must of had bbc's in them too. I'd be interested to see how much over the hood that thing will go |

well I am trying to keep the hood to some sort of workable level by running a procharger instead of the traditional roots like a 6-71 or something.
as for weight im not sure even how much this things weights stock I should look it up and start figuring a few things out lol _________________

3541lbs with iron V8 and TH400 tranny. Not too shabby. I still need to take my camaro to a scale. See how much damage I've done. With tranny and rear upgrades you just might offset the weight of the block on the corvette. Should be a sweet ride! |
