i want to upgrade the cam in my 86 transam, its a tpi car, what cam should i use? im aware that its a roller cam.
would a zz4 cam or lt1 work with the stock rockers arms? im upgrading the exhaust and will upgrade air intake and instal headers,700r4 already has a shift kit it shifts at 2300 rpm by itself, rear gears are 3.73 aussie possie. Confused

I used an lt1 cam and it woke up my old lb9 quite a bit. Bonus is I picked it up on camaroz28.com for like $10. Very Happy It's nothing amazing but it helped I think? You'll be spending a heck of a lot more for a more aggressive cam.

No, oughta still be flat tappet. As I said.. 87 is the first year for roller. 86 was first year for 1 piece rear main seal. I have a 305 out of an 86 and its definatly flat tappet.

The one that's already in it, if you go with a bigger cam you need to use the recommended springs for it.

max lift varries, lots of people will pull the rocker studs out, before the lift needed to make contact. IIRC the max lift stock is about .480.

The centerline doens't matter so much, but to keep the computer happy, the to keep the LSA at 112 or higher.

just for some other 305 cam help info.

I have a 204/214 .447 .447 112 cam in my car, you can see the dyno results. it put about 230hp down to the wheels.

that gives you at least one reference point.

IF, I was doing it again, i would get not too much more agressive of a cam, as far as I would go on a computer controlled 305, would be in the 210-212 intake range, and try to get lift about .475, and on a 112 or 114 LSA.

That should be good for 250-260 HP at the wheels (figure right about 300 at the crank)

If you cam beyond that, I would think the computer make not like it too much, and will require a lot of tuning. As it is, even with my cam, I spent a lot of time tuning it in. I just want to make sure you are aware, that with computer controled cars like ours, putting a cam in, you will need to custom tune it, and get all the equipment to burn your own chips.
