Replacing the valve stem seals on the bird soon. Are these what I want?
I bought umbrella seals from NAPA the other day, but im wondering if I should get these too.

Umbrellas don't do shizzle.

You SHOULD have positive seals. Without pulling a valve cover you wont know for sure.

You'll need 16.

There are several sizes you got the 11/32" right for the valve stem, but the base where it hooks to the head can be .500, .530, .560 and more.

Ok so I'll take the umbrella's back and see if I can find these locally, sounds like I'll have to compare to the original for sizing still though right?

You should be able to order stockers. I know they just come in a headset if you buy one, so there must be some kind of catalogging somewhere.

Forgot felpro and gm like to use positive seals on the intakes only. Victor used to have positives for the exhausts as well. Supposedly made out of different material. I usually just use the same ones for both.

Is there an advantage to using different ones on the exhaust? lol I don't get why they'd do that.

The reasoning is that the exhaust doesnt have vacuum sucking the oil down the guide. Therefore only the o-ring is needed.

That makes sense, hopefully this is the cause of the firebird's blues, it's smoked a bit ever since I got it.

Still need something though. Had a motor with 100 miles on it come in and the teflon seals... two of them were leaking down the stem into the exhaust port! lol

Bulletin Number: 91-6-55
Reference Number: 136007
Publish Date: 11/91

Models 1987-91 FIREBIRD AND GRAND PRIX
Affected: MODELS W/5.0 and 5.7L

This bulletin cancels and supersedes bulletin 88-6-91A issued 3/89 and 88-6-85 issued 12/88. Please discard these two bulletins.

A new valve stem seal kit (P/N 12511890) has been released to address this concern. The kit incorporates a new umbrella seal with a "viton" insert for the exhaust valve stem.

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

That's all I have to offer, but I'm sure you already knew this.
