Since we've been having some nice weather this week, and today was no exception, I decided to do some interior work to the 89. I finally got around to installing that front carpet that I bought from Tim (Magman).

After removing the seats, I found lots of junk left by the previous owner.

After removing the carpet and cleaning everything up, I found a floor board in very good shape.

Before putting the new carpet in, I put in a layer of sound deadening material (aka Peel-N-Seal from my local Lowe's).

Very cool Al! Have you driven it? I am curious to know if the sound deadener made a discernible difference.

I am also interested on how the sound stuff worked. Also, how much did weight do you think it added?

I haven't driven it yet. I don't expect much since I still need to do the sails and cargo area later. The stuff comes in a 6" by 25' roll and I have about 3 1/2 rolls, what you see is just under 3 rolls (I did the door panels earlier with the window regulators). Each roll i think weighs in at about 7 to 8 pounds.

looks nice...i'd like to change out the carpet in the 85 eventually and go to black...already picked up my black floor mats, which still look cool with the gray imo. Smile

Looks nice Al! Glad the carpet worked out for you. I found the same thing in both those cars I parted, usually around $1.25 in change under the seats/carpet!

Yup. That has been the plan all along. We'll see about track time after I get there, but tuning for sure Cool

Mike & John, my noise level is down just a hair. Mostly just the road noise from the tires, the exhaust and rear end noise are still prominent mostly because there is no material back there. When I get to it, I'll probably use more than 4 rolls back there - I have at least two whole quarter panels, all the cargo area and the spare tire well.

Necro'd.

I pm'd Al the other day about what specific stuff he used and picked up 4 rolls of it on Friday night. Saturday spent the day pulling the seats/carpet out and ditto'd Als install except I put all four rolls on the floorboards under the seat and at the feet. It's actually cut down on the resonance and noise inside the car! Great stuff for CHEAP.

No, the carpet is still the same shade of green. Very Happy

I thought about dyeing it but spent that money in insurance.

Dude, you should have Rhino-lined the whole thing, then drilled a couple of holes in the low spots. That way you wouldn't ever have to put the top up. Razz

I am going to do the same on my doors when doing the sweeps and corner trim.
Do you notice less thud from the door, vibration?

Glad it worked out for you Ian. I'm going to do the cargo area in mine when the weather is warmer. I need to remove all the plastic trim so I can remove the worn out carpet covering and reapply some new stuff (maybe felt), may as well finish the rest of the car in the process Very Happy

Al, I've read quite a few complaints on random forums about people who have used Peel-N-Seal and have then had a tar/asphalt smell in hot weather. You've had it in for awhile now; any odd smell when we hit 109* this summer?

I want to do this same thing to the Monterey... after I get everything else done that I want to do on that car. Rolling Eyes

I drove the car last summer in that heat. 106* in Bothell and the tops still on the car. I didn't notice much, if any asphalt odor. Even some (not all) of your better sound deadening material is asphalt based, some others are butyl based.

BTW, do you need a heat gun to apply this stuff, does does it go on well in our current cold weather?
