|
|
my cooling fan can on lastnight while driving it and it wont shut off now i had to find the plug for it and unplug it to get it to shut off, any idea what i need to fix ? the temp gauge kinda worked when it wanted to so im thinking i may need a new sending unit ? would that cause the fan itself to stay on ?
oh and this is on my Daytona 2.2 btw |

Sounds like the relay stayed open. Fan gets battery power straight from the relay so if the relay stays on, the fan stays on.
Or the key on power/ecm power to the relay is staying on for some reason.
Sounds like relay _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

| Assuming it's a standard four-wire relay, you should be able to quickly test if the trigger has both 12V and ground. If not, it's a bad relay as Paul mentioned. If they do, then think faulty sending unit grounding out, or something along those lines. I'm not sure if Mopar ran switched 12V, or switched ground to trigger the relay. |

whent out and plugged the fan back in, yep fan kicked on so i found the relays on the fender well, started tapping on them with a wrench one by on and magically the fan shut off NAPA is the only one to have it on hand. seems to be there the place to go for relays, switches and sending units here in salem that was the situation for the firebird i had before, the parts houses down here are kinda full of idiots. _________________

His car in particular, no.
A good DSM should be able to handle the average 305 car pretty easily though. |

Nailed it. Had his relay been good, the CTS or a short in the trigger line would be the next two culprits.

If the cts shorts to ground the fan will only come on when they key is on. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

| Greg was talking about his dodge. The ECM controls the cooling fan. An open in the CTS circuit or disconnecting the CTS will turn the cooling fan on. That shouldnt happen with the key off though. So if the fan continued to run after the key is off then its most likely the relay sticking. |

| Heheh.. remember how you time one? You disconnect the cts.. and then the computer goes into limp mode, fan comes on, and you can set the timing. The fan coming on is what the texts tell you to listen for before trying to time it. |

Don't recall having timed one. And missed the Dodge bit in the first post. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |
