so my power steering pump is leaking, which is the smarter choice, Reman'd pump or a rebuild kit? i already have the rebuild kit, it came with the car but i haven't really heard of anyone rebuilding a power steering pump. what do you guys think, rebuild or replace?

Make sure it's the pump and not the fittings of the lines.

Remaned pump is 100 times easier.

Buy a new $20 feed line while you're at it.

Don't forget to replace the return line also. It's just bulk power steering hose with worm drive clamps to secure it since it's low pressure.

We had a flyer on PS pumps and 70% of the time pump failure was due to the hoses breaking down and contaminating the pump.

You will need to remove the pulley from the old pump and press it on the new one. Make sure you use the special PS pump pulley remover and installer or you will break the pulley if you use a 3 jaw puller on it. The parts store should have one for rent.

well i think its the feed line, since its leaking from the back down the high pressure line. found that out today.

It usually is the high pressure line that goes first, but if the pressure line is deteriorated enough to leak, the return line is the same age as the pressure line is, so a few $$$ to replace the return is money well spent.

I replaced the PS pump a couple of weeks ago on my wifes 90 convertible. I bought a remanufactured pump without a resevour from NAPA for about 55.00 bucks. You wouldnt think a rebuild kit would be much cheaper than that.

Try replacing the lines first. Takes about two minutes if you don't have AC. Little bit more work if you do.

I've never seen the pump itself leak. Leaks usually come from the pitman arm seal, or the line seals.

so im going to replace the lines tomorrow.... in the parking lot of an apartment complex.... that should be fun.... i can get beer if anyone has an open driveway in vancouver/portland. oh and my compressor for the ac is still there but my lines are gone (have been since before i owned the car) is it safe to just pull the compressor out? car has the v-belt system not the serp setup.

You can pull the compressor off if you'd like. Free up that 2hp from losing one belt too!
